The Mountain Brook High School boys basketball team won the Class 6A state title on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at UAB's Bartow Arena.

March 3, 2021 — The Mountain Brook High School boys basketball team won the Class 6A state title by defeating Spanish Fort 56-43 on Wednesday at UAB’s Bartow Arena. The victory clinched the Spartans’ sixth state championship since 2013. 

“I’m extremely proud of our program. When I took this over...no one would have been able to predict this,” first-year head coach Tyler Davis said. “But at the same time, when you get a group of kids and a group of coaches, and the resources that we have and the work ethic we have of our guys — to work hard every day — you just want to max out on what your potential is as a team, and so we were able to do obviously a special thing of winning this state.”

Mountain Brook won 19 consecutive games to close the season and finished with a 30-6 overall record. The team advanced to the state title game with a 66-63 triple-overtime victory against Eufaula in Monday’s state semifinal. In Wednesday’s final, the Spartans led 27-25 halftime and then pulled away in the waning minutes. 

Rayven Turner scored a team-high 14 points in the championship tilt and was named state tournament MVP. Julius Clark and Ty Davis also notched double-figure scoring totals, with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Point guard Bo Barber had seven points and joined Turner on the all-state-tournament team.

As a program, the Spartans have reached the state final in eight of the last nine seasons. They previously captured state championships in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Tyler Davis served as an assistant to former head coach Bucky McMillan in each of those title runs. This time, he ran the show. 

“Even if we didn’t win the state, I would have been extremely proud of these guys, because obviously playing a season in the middle of a pandemic was not easy for anybody,” Davis said. “So I can’t really say anything else other than I’m extremely happy and humbled to be a state champion leading Mountain Brook basketball."
