MISD student saves a life

Heritage High School junior Austin Anderson did something very few people can say. He helped save a life. Austin completed a Stop the Bleed (STB) training offered through the district, and his parents provided him with his own STB kit that he carries with him. That kit played a significant role in helping save the life of a person Austin had never met.

This past summer, Austin was at an event when another eventgoer sustained a severe laceration injury to the leg that required the use of a tourniquet. An off-duty EMT was also at the event, but his tourniquet was unavailable. Austin had his STB kit and recognized the need for intervention. He offered his tourniquet and assistance. The tourniquet was applied to the injured individual, who later required multiple sutures.

“That day, Austin was able to use the lifesaving skills he learned through the Stop the Bleed program,” said Heritage High School Nurse Karis Schumacher. “He offered his assistance and the use of his tourniquet. We are so proud of the brave actions he took to assist someone in need.”

The Midlothian ISD Board of Trustees recognized Austin at its October school board meeting for his role in helping a person in need by using his STB training and ultimately helping to save a life.
