Convocation lights up the arena

Midlothian ISD staff attended Convocation on August 7 to celebrate the start of the 2024-25 school year. It was an incredible morning filled with inspirational messages about excellence and the lasting impact those in education make in the life of a child. Numerous student groups, including the Belles and Pantherettes, Jag and Panther drumlines, HHS and MHS cheer squads and color guard teams participated in the event.

Richard Pena, co-founder of the Will of a Warrior and MISD Trustee, delivered the keynote. His powerful message of inspiration and insight into the struggles and challenges some students face was moving. MISD staff cried and laughed together as Pena walked them through his journey as a student and how teachers in MISD changed the trajectory of his life. One long-time MISD educator, Mrs. Janice Nance, was credited with making the biggest impact on Pena during his days as a student and even into adulthood. “She has always been there for me, encouraging me every step of the way,” said Pena. “Even today, she continues to be by my side.”

Pena concluded his keynote speech by presenting a special “lifesaving” award to his number one MISD educator, Mrs. Nance. Her daughter Karrie Pressnell, a teacher at Jr. Irvin Elementary in MISD, witnessed the momentous occasion that ended with a standing ovation from an arena of 1200 staff members.

District Teachers of the Year, Diana Hall from MHS and Jenny Brown from Jean Coleman Elementary, followed Pena with stories about the individuals who inspired them to be who they are today. The duo celebrated loved ones and significant educators who guided and supported them through their journey.

Superintendent Dr. David Belding provided closing remarks. He continued the message of inspiring excellence, saying, “Our students carry us with them throughout their lives. Whether in the classroom teaching, driving a bus, or serving lunch in the cafeteria, we are always their teachers.”

Convocation ended on a high note with a drumming rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin” by Dr. Belding. He was joined by members of the Jag and Panther drumline, and HHS and MHS cheer and drill teams who provided a high-kicking choreographed routine that lit up the arena.

From all the student groups displaying their talents to Richard Pena's motivational message about inspiring excellence, the Teachers of the Year sharing stories about those who inspired them, and Dr. Belding bringing down the house on the drums, it was a memorable event that set the stage for a successful start to a new school year.

Thanks to all MISD staff members who brought so much spirit and enthusiasm to the event, Methodist Midlothian Medical Center, and Midlothian ISD Education Foundation for joining us. MISD also extends a special thanks to Methodist Midlothian and Rally Sportswear for sponsoring this year's MISD Proud T-shirt.
