Career Development Model

The Alabama Career Development Model is designed to provide all students enrolled in Grades K-12 in the Alabama educational system with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to be college and career ready and prepared to enter postsecondary education or the workforce. The ever-changing workforce presents new challenges to those seeking productive careers. The impact of rapidly evolving technology and an expanding global economy is being felt across all career areas and at all levels of education. Employers expect prepared, motivated, highly skilled workers who are literate, numerate, and who have mastered employability skills like teamwork, initiative, and communication. Students graduating from one of Alabama’s high schools, colleges, or universities cannot be assured of employment without the necessary training and skills to meet an employer’s needs.

Career Readiness Indicators

Career Readiness Indicators (CRI) are credentials/certifications made available to all students enrolled in a program where career and technical skill proficiencies are aligned with industry recognized standards. CRIs may not be available for all programs. Credentials provide proof that the student possesses the minimum skills required for entry-level employment. CRIs should be included in the student information file. Testing can occur at the discretion of the LEA Career and Technical Director depending on student readiness. Pre-assessments should be required. It is the responsibility of the Career and Technical Director to ensure each program has a well-planned method for determining the readiness of students to attempt certification exams to maintain a high rate of student success. It is strongly recommended that the method for determining the readiness of students to attempt certification exams be driven by program data, classroom performance, and skill acquisition within the student’s pathway.
