Medical Assistant Program

Monday, October 17 at 6pm
Wednesday, November 9 at 12pm
Wednesday, December 7 at 6pm

Lorain County Community College is expanding delivery locations for its medical assisting certificate program, now partnering with the Lorain County JVS (LCJVS) to offer the in-demand program beginning fall semester at the LCJVS in Oberlin.

Medical assistants perform clinical and clerical tasks that keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists running smoothly. Depending on the size of the practice and state regulations, medical assistants may focus on clinical tasks such as taking medical histories and vital signs, assisting during examinations or procedures, and collecting or preparing laboratory specimens. In other practices, medical assistants deal with the administrative end of the office by answering telephones, scheduling appointments, handling insurance forms and billing, purchasing equipment and supplies, and more.

One-Year Certificate
The Lorain County Community College medical assisting one-year certificate program provides students with an orientation to the medical field as an assistant to the physician. Students are introduced to procedures in medical examination, use of laboratory equipment, medical terminology, and office business procedures used in health care facilities. Upon completion of the accredited program, students are eligible to take the certification examination of the American Association of Medical Assistants. The one-year certificate program prepares students to take the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) examination to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Students will also earn American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) provider and First Aid Safety cards.

Career Opportunities
Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 19 percent now through 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As a result, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for Medical Assistants is more than $35,000 a year.
