• Canyon Elementary SCC Meeting Minutes

    Meeting Convened at 3:55 pm

     

    Members Present: Britta Brown, Emily Webb, Sarah Potter, Leslie Burt, Cami Davis, Cambee Clare, Maria Elegante  Members absent:  Jackie Lopez

     

    Review  of Prior Meeting Minutes:  This is the First meeting of the 2023-24 

     

    Discussion Items: 

    1. Structure and order of SCC meetings. 

      1. We discussed having a representative from ELL Population. Asked for a referral from ELL teachers. Jackie Lopez has been asked to join us. 

      2. Typically held on Tuesdays. Could move to another time. Consensus was Monday after school. 

      3. Nov. 13 for the next meeting. No December meeting. Meetings will be held in Jan/Feb/Mar

      4. Elections can be in spring or fall. 

      5. Slides from the meeting with Tim don’t have commentary. He may send a recording to go along with the slides at some point. 

     

    1. Review Rules of Order for Canyon Elementary

      1. Discussed membership regarding those joining and members needed. 

      2. Employee to parent ratio. 

      3. Concerns were raised for how to move forward when a member is not coming. 

      4. Additional language was added to accommodate for that occurrence. 

      5. Language was also added for the occurrence of a council member needing to step away for personal reasons. 

      6. The council may need to remove members who are not cohesive with the goals of the council. 

      7. Discussed how to go about that if the occasion arises. 

      8. Motion by Emily Webb to approve Rules of Action.

      9. Motion by Britta Brown to second the Rules of action. 

      10. All were in approval of the Rules of Action. 

    2. Election: Chair and Vice Chair

      1. We discussed the roles and responsibilities of a Chair and Vice chair for new members. 

      2. Britta was nominated by Maria Elegante for the Chair - Approved by all

      3. Cami Davis nominated Sarah Potter for the Vice Chair - Approved by all 

      4. Council Membership needs to be submitted to the district by Oct 20, 2023

    3. School Improvement Plans

      1. Leslie explained the status of our Title 1 funding

      2. The council discussed how to approach getting people to apply for Free and Reduced lunch for next year. 

      3. A video for next year may help those who are apprehensive about signing up. 

      4. Leslie described how we are using Pathways of Progress to determine progress for individual students. 

      5. At Canyon we are aiming to have 75% of our students making that typical growth. 

      6. Math assessments are the iReady diagnostic tools that allow us to assess student growth. 

      7. Aides are placed in the classroom during instructional time as well as TII time. 

      8. This allows for faster feedback for students and leads to more impactful learning. 

      9. Canyon employs forty or so people that are providing support through math, literacy, SPED and ELL. 

      10. Leslie went through the funding from Trustlands and TSSA money and funding. 

    4. Canyon Parents and Family Engagement Plan. 

      1. Leslie explained measures and efforts that the school and teachers are doing to provide input and information for parents. 

      2. Activities that we provide and do that help support families and our community. 

      3. Britta motioned to approve the Canyon Parents and Family Engagement Plan. 

      4. Marie motioned to approve and seconded

      5. The council approved through vote. 

    5. Review School Data

      1. Leslie explained the shift the district made from a literacy facilitator to a RTI facilitator that will help address both reading and math. 

      2. As a Title One school we have one and a half facilitators. 

    6. Additional Items for Discussion

      1. Bond meeting? Word on the street? Concern for how this will help Canyon. 

      2. Discussion centered around ensuring that neighbors and the public are aware of the information regarding the bond and that they have accurate information. 

      3. There is a need to help the public understand how Canyon will be affected and will benefit from the bond passing.
