• SCC Meeting Minutes

    Tuesday September 28, 2021

     

    • The meeting started with Stacie introducing how the meeting will run today and in the future. 

    • Marci Bowen came to describe how digital literacy is taught at Canyon. 

      1. About once a month she teaches each class a lesson on Digital literacy. 

      2. Some of the sources she uses are Common Sense.org and Netsmartz. 

      3. Topics she covers include:how to be safe, cyber bullying, how tech affects us, how are you tracked online, and making them aware of their online presence.  

      4. All the material is age appropriate for each grade level. 

      5. Anyone can access it. Especially parents. 

      6. Links are accessible through the library link on the Canyon Site. 

      7. We will push out information with the links.

      8.  Becky Johansen- Suggested a PIN night topic related to digital literacy.

      9. First one end of October- taught by Marci.

      10.  Parents not aware this is being talked about at school but are happy to hear this. 

      11. At the PIN night Marci can discuss: How to get there and what topics were talked about. What is it? What does it mean? 

    • Review the general function of the group and welcome the new members.

    • Everyone went around and introduced themselves. 

    • Brief side tangent about the Wellness Center. It’s as great as we expected!

    • We discussed the folder that Stacie put together for each person and what the contents are. Included are the goals and plans for next year. 

    • Other items included are 

      1. TSSA

      2. Dates and Times for meetings

      3. School Plan

      4. Rules and order of Procedures. 

    • The SCC functions as a voice for the community to help bring attention to the needs of the community. 

      1. What the community would like to see us do.

      2. Programs that you would like us to try. 

      3. Anyone can attend but the only voting members are the council members. 

    • Virtual Training on Oct 6, 2021

      1. Will be  a quick overview. 

      2. Only need to listen to it if you haven’t before. 

      3. Not kicked off if you don’t go. 

      4. Helps to understand how money is funded and allocated. 

    • PIN night- Parent Information Night. 

      1. Required to do because we are on TSI-Target School Improvement.

      2. Aimed at helping out ELL’s pass the WIDA and the RISE. 

      3. Currently for ELL we have 2.5 Teachers and 5 Aides. 

      4. EL’s are pulled during writing and aides pushed in during ELA.

      5. This year aides are also pushing in for math in some classes. 

      6. Stacie described how this helps them not miss their classroom content.

      7. WIDA test that is taken in January/February. When they pass before they leave Elementary this gives them the option to choose their own classes in upper grades. If not they are locked into majority language classes. 

      8. Our focus is getting them to pass the RISE. We need to help influence a cultural change in families to help them focus more on education and see the benefits of supporting their students. 

      9. PIN NIght gives parents the resources they need to support their students.

      10. Still shoot for Wednesday at 7pm

    • Possible Topics for PIN Night:  

      1. Mental Health/Wellness Center

      2. Alcohol and Drugs-Street Drugs Lingo the drugs are called by

      3. Social Skills and Pragmatics

      4. How to raise confident children/ How to interact with others/Communication skills

      5. How to teach Cultural Diversity

      6. Positive Parenting-Resources

    • Put out in an email and we can rank the order we would like to see them taught in.
