Principal's Messages

Hello, Hillside Families!

Unbelievably, we have just one more day left this school year!  It was a great year, and I know I speak on behalf of the Hillside staff when I say that it was a pleasure working with each of your children.  Our work was enhanced because of your support, for which we are sincerely grateful.

The close of every school year is a bittersweet time for many reasons.  We will miss our fifth graders very much as they move onto the next phase of their educational journeys.  We will also miss students who are moving away or attending other schools.  Best wishes to them all!

We, too, will miss staff members who are moving on from their roles at Hillside School.  We say goodbye and thank you to the following members of the staff:

  • Mrs. Samantha Minniti, who returns to her home school, Collins.  Thanks to Mrs. Minniti for filling in for Mrs. Dugan for the last few weeks!  It was great getting to know you!

  • Miss Catherine Bitar, special education teacher, who filled in for Mrs. Gropack starting in January.  We are grateful to have had Miss Bitar join us and wish her all the best in her future endeavors!

  • Miss Axel Marrero, who has served as our World Language teacher for the last two years.  It has been a pleasure having Miss Marrero at Hillside, and we wish her the greatest success moving forward!

  • Instructional aide, Mrs. Josephine Agostinelli ("Miss J"), whose family has a wonderful opportunity to relocate to Ireland.  Thanks to Mrs. Agostinelli for her dedication to our school and students for the last five years.  She will be missed!

  • Mrs. Pia Bauer, Reading Interventionist, who will be on maternity leave next year.  We wish Mrs. Bauer all the best to her growing family!

  • Mrs. Etleva Vatoci, Strings Teacher and Orchestra Director, who will no longer be at Hillside next year, as she is picking up additional teaching responsibilities at Mount Pleasant Middle School. We thank her for the many years of service to Hillside School, and wish her well!

  • Mrs. Addy Gianduso, Kindergarten Aide, whose position was reduced because of a drop in incoming Kindergarten sections.  We are grateful to "Miss Addy" for her support this year, and wish her all the best!

Many thanks and best wishes to everyone mentioned above!

Summer is always a great time to catch up on some reading and keep reading skills sharp.  To that point, we ask that current K-4 families kindly review Summer Reading information here.  Please note the information regarding the Hillside Summer Reading Challenge, where students are challenged to read a certain number of books and to record their efforts in the logs in the document.  Students should return logs in September to be acknowledged for their efforts at our annual Pep Rally!  Thanks, in advance, for your support!

Former Hillside husky and Harvard College student, Matthew Zhang, is co-founder of Omega Speech and Debate.  He and I had the opportunity to catch up recently, and he shared that his organization is offering a summer camp for students interested in speech and debate.  Information about the summer camp can be found here, and he encourages interested students to sign up for session 3.  I wanted to be sure to pass this information along!

Today's Fifth Grade Talent Show was truly awesome!  We have a talented group of fifth graders, and wish them well as they pursue their talents in the future!  We are excited about tomorrow's Fifth Grade Clap Out, which will take place rain or shine or extreme heat!  Families and guests must park off-site and should start gathering at the front loop near the pillar doors at around 11:30 a.m.  Please be sure to stand behind the cones.  Thank you, and we'll see you then!

Please see the reminders from Sunday's message below:

____________________________________________________________________________

REMINDERS

1)  We will have our Fifth Grade Clap Out on Thursday at dismissal.  Families attending are encouraged to gather in the circle near the pillar doors starting at around 11:30 a.m.  Fifth graders will start making their way through the school at 11:45 a.m. and will exit the building at the pillar doors, which for many, are the doors they first entered in Kindergarten.  A bittersweet moment, for sure, but we look forward to one final celebration of our awesome fifth grade class!

2)  Note to Kindergarten and First Grade Families regarding pickup on Thursday, 6-20:  In order to alleviate the congestion expected at door 9 on the last day of school due to the Fifth Grade Clap Out, families who pick up Kindergarten and first grade students should meet them at door 8, at the bottom of the stairs that come from the exit near the school's library onto the blacktop.  Thank you for understanding!

3)  We have partial days of school on Wednesday and Thursday.  Students will dismiss at 12:00 p.m. (11:55 a.m. for Kindergarten).  Families are asked to ensure appropriate pick up arrangements for these last two days of school.  Thank you!  Note that lunch is not served on partial days, but students are still welcome to bring a healthy snack to school.

4)  Final report cards will be available to families in the Genesis Parent Portal after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

5)  School Supply Kits for the 24-25 school year are now available for purchase!  This convenient service saves parents the potential hassle of shopping for school supplies during the summer, especially late August when everyone else is doing it, too!  Interested families can find information here.  Given that this is optional, of course, the attached has the itemized supply list for those who would prefer to purchase on their own.  Please note that the purchase window ends July 1.  Special thanks to the Hillside PTA and Supply Coordinators, Mrs. Abramowitz and Mrs. Litsky, for coordinating the process with us!

6)  Families whose children are not returning (i.e., those who are moving or attending a private school) to Hillside next school year should notify the office as soon as possible.  Please contact Mrs. Scroeder at jschroeder@livingston.org, and she will provide you with necessary information to withdraw your children and access school records.  Thank you!

7)  Livingston Youth and Community Services (LYCS) has opened registration for the Leaders Program for the 24-25 school year.  Information about the program and registration can be found here.

____________________________________________________________________________

On a final note, I want to thank the students, staff, families, and the wonderful Hillside PTA for making this year a really special and successful one.  It continues to be a privilege to serve as your principal, a role that I shall never take for granted.  Hillside is a wonderful place because of the people who make up our school community–staff, students, and families alike–and we look forward to our continued success–together!

Have a happy and safe summer, Hillside School!

Best regards,

Mr. Gramata

Hello, Hillside Families!  Happy Father's Day to all the awesome Hillside dads and to the families who celebrate!

It's hard to believe that we're approaching the final four days of the school year!  It's been a great one, and I look forward to ending it well and with a lot of fun and celebration.

We have our Student Council Election Assembly Monday morning.  After all of our candidates share their speeches, the student body will select the next Student Council Executive Board.  Good luck to all!

Along with some grade level class parties, we look forward to the final installment of our Character Colors Wars activities!  On Wednesday, we will have our annual Fifth Grade Talent Show (for the student body only).  At the show, pillar teams will present cheers/songs that they will practice and rehearse Tuesday in Caring Communities groups.  Please send your children into school on Wednesday with the color shirt that corresponds with their assigned character pillar (same as Wall Decorating and Field Day).  Thank you, in advance!  Can't wait for a fun Talent Show!

We will have our Fifth Grade Clap Out on Thursday at dismissal.  Families attending are encouraged to gather in the circle near the pillar doors starting at around 11:30 a.m.  Fifth graders will start making their way through the school at 11:45 a.m. and will exit the building at the pillar doors at around noon, which for many, are the doors they first entered in Kindergarten.  A bittersweet moment, for sure, but we look forward to one final celebration of our awesome fifth grade class!

Note to Kindergarten and First Grade Families regarding pickup on Thursday, 6-20:  In order to alleviate the congestion expected at door 9 on the last day of school due to the Fifth Grade Clap Out, families who pick up Kindergarten and first grade students should meet them at door 8, at the bottom of the stairs that come from the exit near the school's library onto the blacktop.  Thank you for understanding!

Yearbooks for families of K-4 students who ordered them will be delivered to classrooms this week.  All fifth graders will receive them tomorrow in time for their Yearbook Signing Breakfast.    Special thanks to the Yearbook Committee for a job well done!

Final report cards will be available to families in the Genesis Parent Portal after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.   Families should ensure that all items that belong to the school are returned this week, particularly library books and classroom books to avoid delay in accessing student report cards. Thank you!

Families whose children are not returning (i.e., those who are moving or attending a private school) to Hillside next school year should notify the office as soon as possible.  Please contact Mrs. Schroeder at jschroeder@livingston.org, and she will provide you with necessary information to withdraw your children and access school records.  Thank you!

Happy Summer, Hillside School!

Hello, Hillside Families!

What a fun week we had!  We started the week with Character Colors Wars Wall Decorating.  If you're around the building this week, please check out the students' character-themed messages on the exterior walls!  Our fifth graders who were in the musical showcased a masterful performance of Shrek, Jr.!  So much talent–they truly impressed!  We enjoyed the PTA's Carnival on Thursday, and we rounded out the week on Friday with an awesome Field Day and our annual Fifth Grade Games.  We had perfect weather for these fun-filled days!

The excitement continues this week as we look forward to the following:

  • The Livingston Public Library is coming to Hillside Tuesday afternoon to share about its summer programs.  Information will go home with students.

  • Our fifth graders will attend the Fifth Grade Boat Trip on Wednesday, courtesy of the Hillside PTA and the Fifth Grade Committee.  This trip, the last these students will take as Huskies, will serve to celebrate our fifth graders' time at Hillside, and we are very grateful to the PTA for all its work in making this happen.  The students will surely have a great time!

  • Third graders will be treated to an Instrumental Demonstration Assembly on Thursday afternoon.  The purpose of this assembly is to showcase the available instrumental options for next school year.  Information about band and orchestra for next year for third grade families is forthcoming.

  • We look forward to welcoming new and returning Kindergarten families on Thursday evening at Incoming Kindergarten Parent Orientation.  The event will start at 7:00 p.m.  The main door will open at 6:45 p.m.  Families will first be able to tour each of the Kindergarten classrooms, followed by a presentation in the upper gym at 7:30 p.m.

  • On Thursday and Friday of this week, we will have our school-wide Literacy Celebration, where buddy classes will share their literacy work over the year with one another and celebrate all the learning that took place in literacy this year.  Additionally, for the first time ever, Hillside will have a Vocabulary Parade as part of the celebration on Friday morning.  Information about the parade can be found here, and we thank you, in advance, for your assistance and support!

Happy Summer, Hillside School!

Hello, Hillside Families!

I hope you are enjoying the long holiday weekend!  On this Memorial Day, we remember and thank those members of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms.  And, we appreciate those who continue to do so.

We are excited about our eighth annual Character Color Wars activities, which include this week's Wall Decorating and Field Day!  Please see this letter for important information.  Students should wear the pillar color shirt that corresponds with their assigned Caring Communities groups on Tuesday and Friday of this week.  If your children forgot who their Caring Communities teachers are, please reach out to their classroom teachers.  Thanks so much for your support, as always!

We look forward to this week's Shrek, Jr. performances by participating fifth graders.  They have been working incredibly hard on this production since December, and we can't wait to see the show!  Please note that the evening performance is limited only to families and friends of the cast and crew who have received tickets.  Doors will open on Wednesday evening at 6:45 p.m.  Thank you!

We have our Field Day on Friday, weather permitting.  Students should come to school not only in their pillar color shirt, but with hats and sunscreen already applied, wearing sneakers, and with plenty of bottled water.  Field Day will take place during morning hours before lunch.  Students in grades K-4 will also participate as part of the audience for our annual Fifth Grade Games in the afternoon, where fifth graders will play against Hillside staff for bragging rights in volleyball, kickball and frisbee.  We can't wait!  Game on!
