Health Careers

HEALTH CAREERS programs at Franklin Tech provide students a foundation for future careers in the health field. FTC offers two programs for students interested in Health including:

  • Introduction to Medical Science
  • Certified Nurse Aide

Introduction to Medical Science
Introduction to Medical Science is a two-hour block class open to juniors interested in pursuing a career in a health care field. The curriculum is designed to introduce students to the health care delivery system and to provide academic knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, communication, infection control, safety, first aid, vital signs, and a wide range of health career opportunities. Intro to Med Science is a recommended prerequisite for Certified Nurse Assistant and Diversified Health Occupations.

Certified Nurse Assistant CNA
Certified Nurse Assistant is open to seniors and guides the student in building a foundation of knowledge for the health care profession. Basic care and communication skills are developed and practiced in theory and in the skills lab. These skills are then applied with elderly adults in the clinical setting. In addition to instruction in nursing, students will receive CPR and phlebotomy training. Phlebotomy instruction provides the student with a working knowledge of collecting blood while emphasizing patient safety, quality assurance, and universal and standard precautions. Successful students may test for their C.N.A. and phlebotomy licenses at no cost.

Employment Opportunities
Jobs in the healthcare profession are projected to grow by 19%, adding more jobs than any other occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Student Benefits
FREE Training
High School students completing a program at FTC receive FREE tuition and training materials. Students also take their program certification test at no cost to them.

Embedded Credit
Students completing a program at FTC have the opportunity to earn academic credits along with their program training. Credit varies among the health courses. Check the FTC handbook or ask your instructor about embedded credit options.

Membership in a Student OrganizationSkillsUSA
Going a step further in rounding out their education, FTC students are encouraged to join a national student organization, SkillsUSA. The members of this organization practice teamwork, leadership and problem-solving. Members have an opportunity to hold office and participate in local, district, state, and national contests.

Internships
Internships play a key role in the health classes. Students in the C.N.A. class are required to have 100 hours of clinical experiences in a long term care facility to take their certification exam.

Dual Credit Option
The Dual Credit Program allows students to enroll in and receive both high school and college credit during normal class hours. Participation in the dual credit program enables students to get a “head start” on their college career as well as prepare for the challenges of college courses. Credits earned under these pro-grams will be applied towards a degree at Crowder College and are generally transferable to other colleges and universities. Students must meet eligibility requirements to participate in the program.
