About Us

Washington Drive Primary School Overview

Washington Drive Primary School, situated in the Harborfields Central School District, caters to pupils in kindergarten through second grade. Our Early Childhood Program is designed to help children transition smoothly from home to the school environment, providing an important first step into elementary education. Our curriculum is uniquely crafted to enhance each child's academic skills, language, social and emotional growth.

The K-2 Experience

The K-2 experience offers a variety of developmentally appropriate opportunities where children can create, explore, and discover while learning. Key aspects of the program include activities that foster a growth mindset and a positive attitude toward school and learning. Throughout their school experience, children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, we nurture the individual personalities and specific learning styles of each child.

Our Programs

English Language Arts:

Our curriculum incorporates six key components known as “The Big 6,” which are essential for successful beginning reading: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Additional information can be found here, Structured Literacy and on the individual grade level curriculum guides, K-2 Curriculum Guides

Math:

Our math program equips students with the necessary skills to master math concepts as outlined in the NYS Standards. Our program emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning and provides both students and parents with access to an online platform offering additional resources and activities.

Social Studies and Science:

Science and Social Studies are integrated into our ELA curriculum through the use of non-fiction literature and authentic learning experiences. Lessons are aligned with the NYS Learning Standards. Science lessons focus on student-directed investigations relevant to their everyday lives and are enhanced by our building’s Makerspace. Makerspace is a unique room that fosters creativity and innovation, allowing students to design, engineer, fabricate, create, build, and collaborate.

Special Subjects:

Music, Art, Physical Education, Library and Technology are integral parts of our students' weekly schedules. The objective of these special areas is to provide a well-rounded experience for our students while also meeting the NYS standards.

School-Wide Activities

Throughout the school year, children at Washington Drive Primary School participate in a variety of activities that inspire a love of learning and strengthen student connections. Our cherished traditions include honoring local service members on Veteran’s Day, producing an annual PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) play featuring staff and parents, and celebrating Earth Day with a Sing-A-Long, among many others. Our robust SEL and anti-bias curriculum encourages children to celebrate themselves and their classmates.
Washington Drive is a great place for students to learn and grow.
