Garfield Athletic Program (Grades 4, 5, 6)

Garfield, as all CUSD, has an athletic program for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. The philosophy of the athletic program for elementary students is to prepare students for the twenty-first century in meeting the challenge of providing for the total development of the student. Athletics provides students with the opportunity to assess and interpret what it takes to be successful. Students who experience the opportunity of participating in athletics will develop cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects which permit them to go beyond achieving in athletics to a lifetime commitment to excellence.

The following is a list of opportunities and the grade level.

Garfield competes with other schools in our Buchanan area (Cole, Century, Dry Creek, Tarpey, and Woods). The varsity teams have the opportunity to compete in a district championship at the end of the season if they are the champions of our area or participate in a game with a team from another area. There is a full participation policy for athletics, however, for safety reasons not all students will be on varsity. We have B and C teams in some sports, depending on how many students are participating.
Participating in the athletic program is a privilege. Those on teams serve as a model for all the students on our campus. Students must have a “C” average with no “Fs” on their progress notes or report cards; must display good citizenship and maturity at all times; and attend all practices.

For more information about our athletic program, please contact Lisa Matson, our Garfield Athletic Director at [email protected] . Look on this site at the beginning of the school year for schedules of games and forms that are required in order to participate. We have a parent information meeting before Back to School Night in the fall.
