What is the Cabarrus County Virtual Academy?

The Cabarrus County Virtual Academy is a blended online and in-person instructional model that incorporates flexibility while also offering in person or synchronous tutoring, small group work, and field trips.
Any student who will be in kindergarten through the 12th grade and resides in the Cabarrus County Schools boundary may apply to attend. All students who apply will be screened in order to determine acceptance. Students should demonstrate the desire for a home learning environment, exceptional motivation to be successful in virtual learning, or a need for a flexible schedule.
Students who have "pursuits" that are outside of school activities requiring 20 or more hours per week are strong candidates for the Virtual Academy.
The Cabarrus County Schools Virtual Academy will be a combination of virtual and in-person instruction in the 2021-22 school year. Students will be required to participate in face-to-face instructional time based on their grade level and performance.
K-2 Instruction will include:
- An 80/20 model with 80% "hands on" learning and 20% virtual/digital
- Thematic based instruction
- An at home instructional kit for exploratory learning
- Parent/Caretaker acts as the facilitator of learning
- Weekly synchronous learning opportunities with a certified teacher
Grades 3-5 Instruction will include:
- A 50/50 model with 50% "hands on" learning and 50% virtual/digital
- Thematic based instruction
- An at home instructional kit for exploratory learning
- Parent/Caretaker acts as the facilitator of learning
- Weekly synchronous learning opportunities with a certified teacher
Grades 6-8 Instruction will include:
- Blended Classes where some learning is synchronous and some done independently
- Elective options facilitated by certified North Carolina teachers
- 10 - 15 Hours a Week Campus/Synchronous Learning
- Additional small group or individual instructional time based on performance
Grades 9-12 Instruction will include:
- Blended Classes where some learning is synchronous and some done independently
- Elective options facilitated by certified North Carolina teachers
- 10 - 15 Hours a Week Campus/Synchronous Learning
- Additional small group or individual instructional time based on performance
- Career and College Promise and AP Course offerings

Program Requirements

Students will be screened prior to placement. Spots in the Academy are limited. If there are more eligible applicants then spaces available, a randomized lottery will be conducted to determine placement.
Students are screened according to the following criteria and may be asked to interview:
-Need for flexible learning environment (ex: an identified pursuit or homeschool student)
-Motivation to be successful in a virtual environment
-Commitment to a non-traditional environment
-Ability to work independently, with limited teacher supervision
-Proficiency on previous two years of End of Grade and/or End of Course Assessments*
Parents must commit to the Parent Agreement Form annually.
