School Start Time Review
-
The 2016 Brighton Blueprint included a recommendation to study how to provide a school day that meets the developmental needs of students. The District developed a feasible transportation model of what “flipping the day” could look like in order to solicit stakeholder feedback. The District then presented the potential impacts to the community and conducted a survey to ascertain interest.
In November of 2016, the District formed a School Start Time Committee to further study the issue. The Committee's charge was to:
- Understand how changing bell times to meet the AMA recommendation will impact students’ school and home-life activities and obligations.
- Understand the impact that changing bell times would have on the programs and services that the District currently provides.
- Make a recommendation to the Superintendent on how to structure the school day so that it best meets the developmental, educational, social, and emotional needs of our students and children.
During the 2017-18 school year, the Committee continued to study how to provide a school day that meets the developmental needs of students. The Committee studied components that mitigate concern heard through surveys about access to facilities and pushing afternoon activities too far into the evening hours. A transportation efficiency study was also completed in the spring. A presentation to the Board of Education in June provided recommendations on what needs to be done next.
Below are survey results, presentations, and other information from the Committee about school start times.
