Sustainability in The Built Environment

  • In this unit students will perform a home energy audit.  Students will learn ways to maximize energy efficiency in the home and minimize costs.  Major topics will include home building and design, insulation, appliances, lighting, heating, family activity, electric bills, and government incentives.  Projects include Kill-a-Watt (load meter), Ice House (insulation project), My Home's Energy Use (audit), Lighting assessment, etc.

    Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to a structure or a process that is resource-efficient for the duration of it's life-cycle.  In this unit, students will use materials and principles of modern construction to develop environmentally friendly structures that complement the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.
