Occupational therapy services in the school setting are determined through the individual education plan (IEP)/individual family service plan (IFSP) process with input from the student’s educational team. As a related service, occupational therapists provide support to help the student make progress toward his/her educational goals. Our team of school occupational therapists (OTs) use a collaborative model to provide direct and indirect services to students in natural school/home settings during the routines of the student’s day. These services may address needs in: fine motor; perceptual motor; sensory motor; sensory integration; and environmental and equipment adaptations to increase participation in functional daily activities (feeding, dressing, writing, organizational skills, hygiene, vocational skills and homemaking). School-based occupational therapy practitioners support academic achievement and social participation by promoting occupation within all school and home routines. Occupational therapists also help children fulfill their role as students and prepare them for college, career, and community integration. The purpose of occupational therapy as a related service is to facilitate the student’s access to and allow them to benefit from their program of instruction.
