The Benjamin Logan Local Board of Education appreciates having school district residents, staff, students and other interested persons attend its meetings. As a resident of the Benjamin Logan Local School District, you have local control over your public schools. Your Benjamin Logan Local School District Board of Education cordially invites you to attend board meetings and to take an active role in the educational affairs of your community.

The decisions of your elected board of education affect your child, your child’s future, your tax rate, and the well-being of your community.

There are many ways for you to participate in your schools:

• Keep informed and actively interested in your schools.
• Know your child's teachers, principal, and curriculum.
• Correspond with or appear before the board to express your views.
• Elect the best qualified board members.
• Participate in local parents' groups and on educational committees of various civic organizations.

Parent’s questions regarding individual students should be discussed with the teacher first and then, if necessary, with the principal or administrator who is closest to the situation. If still further discussion seems necessary, the question can be referred to the superintendent who may consider the matter herself/himself or assign a staff member to resolve it. This procedure has been effective for most people because it gets the questioner a direct response and, at the same time, frees the board to consider matters that affect the entire district.

Citizen Participation

Citizens who have a question or concern for the board of education are invited to communicate with the board in one of three ways: by letter, through an organized group, or by attending a meeting and speaking directly to the board.

The board provides time at the beginning of each regular meeting for comments from visitors under the agenda topic, “Recognition and Hearing of Visitors.”

• Visitors wishing to address the board are asked to telephone or write the office of the superintendent of schools at least 3 days before the meeting in order to be placed on the agenda.
• Speakers need to submit their name, address, group affiliation and topic to be addressed and a written summary of their comments so that board members can review and study them.
• Speakers will be recognized by the presiding officer for a time not to exceed five minutes. No more than thirty minutes may be allocated for citizen expression on any one topic.
• No visitor shall publicly reveal the name or names of any individual or individuals if a complaint or concern is being voiced. These matters must be presented in general terms during visitor recognition, but the visitor may present the name or names to the board members in writing.
• Personnel matters involving school employees are not recognized for discussion at public meeting. This is to protect the rights of the personnel involved.
• In making a presentation to the board, speakers are requested to observe the parliamentary procedures necessary to conduct an orderly session.

All recommendations are considered and acted upon only in open public meetings. By state law, however, executive (private) sessions can be held in regard to personnel matters and business which may involve litigation or property acquisition prior to purchase.

Board of Education Meetings

Regular meetings of the board of education are open to the public and are generally held at 6:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. Meetings are held in the Central Office  Conference Room.
