School description
Lake Hills Elementary School is a newer elementary school in the Alvord Unified School District. We officially opened on August 27, 2007. We are a California Distinguished School having earned this recognition in June of 2010. We met or exceeded all state and federal accountability testing targets and are extremely proud of this high honor. Alvord Unified School District is located approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles in the city of Riverside. Lake Hills is located within the Brehm Community of the Lake Hills Reserve just outside of Corona. Our school is one of 14 elementary schools in Alvord Unified School District and includes a diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic background.
Student Demographics
Approximately 55% of our students are of Hispanic or Latino descent, 27% are White (not of Hispanic origin), 7% are African American, and 9% are Asian or Filipino. 32% of our students are English Language Learners, and 33% of our population participates in free or reduced lunch. 14% of parents report not having graduated high school, 18% are high school graduates, 34% report some college and 25% are college graduates/post graduate. Lake Hills has 45 identified GATE students.
Enrollment
Lake Hills currently serves 750 students in grades K-5. Students at Lake Hills were drawn from McAuliffe, Orrenmaa, and Promenade Elementary Schools, as well as several surrounding private schools.
Staffing and Teacher Credentials
Lake Hills’ teaching staff is comprised of fully credentialed classroom teachers. 100 % of our teaching staff meets all criteria as highly qualified teachers. Additionally, a highly qualified resource teacher, psychologist and speech therapist are on site to assist.
Facilities and Technology
Lake Hills is a newer elementary school, and was completed in August of 2007. Designed by NDTStichler Architecture, Lake Hills broke ground on September 14, 2006. The school sits on 13 acres of land and is 62,849 square feet. The facility includes 35 classrooms, with 5 additional classrooms for joint use and/or growth, a state-of-the-art library with adjoining computer lab, a multi-purpose room, and a school garden. Lake Hills Elementary is equipped with state-of -the-art technology. All classrooms have ceiling mounted LCD projectors, document cameras and 4 Dell student computers. Each teacher is also provided with a Dell computer to assist in assessment, research and instructional delivery. Our three mobile computer lab consists of 30 laptop computers. All computers on site are networked and have internet connection.
Instructional MinutesLake Hills complies with the State mandated instructional minute’s requirement providing 202 instructional minutes for kindergarten, 294 instructional minutes for 1-3, and 314 minutes in grades 4 and 5. Of these total instructional minutes, Lake Hills designates the following daily blocks of instructional minutes for English Language Arts and Math:
ELA: K – 60 minutes; grades 1-3 -150 minutes; grades 4 -5 – 120 minutes
MATH: K – 30 minutes; grades 1-5 – 60 minutes
