"Character is the real foundation of all worthwhile success." -John Hays Hammond
Character Education is an integral part of the PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program here at Twinhill. To assure the students know what is expected from them we use the Character Counts program. The 6 pillars of character that we have adopted into our school culture are as follows: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Students listen to daily annoucements that tie a character trait to inspirational stories and quotes. Every month a new character trait is focused on school wide.
In addition to daily annoucements, school staff also hands out "Caught Being Good" slips to students who are observed demonstrating a positive character trait around campus. The afternoon annoucements highlight those students who have been "caught" and encourage other students to show their positive character as well.
How can you (the parent/guardian) get involved? That is a great question! You can help instill these traits in your student by speaking of and modeling the traits at home. Praise your student when he/she comes home and tells you they were Caught Showing Character and encourage them to continue those positive behaviors. Start pointing out when you see the student exhibiting one of the traits. They will be so excited that you noticed it that they will want to keep up the good behavior.
