Oquenock Elementary School recently celebrated National Foreign Language Week and its diverse school community. Cultural decorations were displayed throughout the school featuring images of children from around the world, words in multiple languages and flags from various countries.

English language learners took center stage with morning announcements, proudly introducing themselves, sharing their countries of origin and offering cultural facts or uplifting affirmations in their native languages. During a designated day, all faculty, staff and students wore a shirt related to their cultural background. This not only highlighted the richness of the school’s cultural diversity but fostered a sense of belonging and pride.

Students also participated in a special cultural project by exploring their identities through artwork and descriptive writing. After reading “The Colors of Us” by Karen Katz, they created self-portraits that helped them explore and celebrate their uniqueness. The project was designed to engage students in meaningful learning that integrated self-reflection of what makes each of us special.
