The 2024-2025 school year has been an exciting one for the music students of Weedsport that participated in the Cayuga County Music Educators Association (CCMEA) All-County Festivals. These festivals celebrate the dedication and talent of student musicians selected from schools throughout the County.

The first festival of the season was hosted by Southern Cayuga High School on November 22nd and 23rd, 2024. This event featured outstanding performances from the Junior High Band and High School Chorus, highlighting weeks of hard work and preparation by the students.

The second festival took place April 4th and 5th, at Port Byron Jr/Sr. High. Audiences were treated to performances by the Elementary Band, Junior High Chorus, and High School Band.

These festivals provide a unique opportunity for students to collaborate with peers from different schools, work with guest conductors, and perform in an advanced ensemble setting. Participation in All-County ensembles is a testament to each student’s musical ability, dedication, and passion for the arts.

We congratulate the following students for their achievement in being selected for these prestigious ensembles:

Elementary Band: Stella Springer, Madeline Hopp, Abigail Szakalski, Hazel Pickering, Seth McEnelly, Tyler Hamberger, Kyle Quinn

Jr. High Chorus: Callie Cook, Kennedy Harmon, Lucy Hopkins, Ty McCarthy, Railynn Nelson, Kelsey Peters

Only 87 out of 591 school districts across New York State had 100% of their students test proficient on Algebra II Regents exams during the 2023-2024 school year—and Weedsport Central School District was one of them, according to data released by the state Education Department.

The only other school district to accomplish this feat in Cayuga County was Union Springs. Onondaga Central School District in Onondaga County also obtained 100% proficiency – it was the only district in its county to do so.

Weedsport Superintendent Gregory Stone was very excited about his school’s accomplishment.

100% proficiency rate on the 2024 Algebra II Regents exam is an extraordinary achievement that reflects the dedication, perseverance, and hard work of our students and staff,” Stone said.

“This accomplishment,” he continued, “places us among the top-performing districts in the state and highlights the unwavering commitment to academic excellence that defines Weedsport. Our students continue to excel on high-stakes assessments across New York State, reinforcing the strength of our instructional programs and the efforts of our educators. We are incredibly proud of this success and remain focused on ensuring outstanding outcomes for all learners.”

Weedsport Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Melinda Ervay echoed Stone’s sentiments.

“Our math program at Weedsport is built on a strong foundation that starts in elementary school and grows with our students through middle and high school,” she said.

“Our teachers,” Ervay continued, “do an incredible job of using student data to guide their instruction, making sure every learner gets the support and challenge they need to succeed. But just as important as the numbers are the relationships—our teachers truly know their students and work hard to help them build confidence and skills in math. This approach not only prepares them for success in Algebra II but also sets them up for future opportunities.”

Students are considered proficient on Regents exams if they score at level three or above. Only districts with reported results are included in the database. Additionally, the state does not report proficiency scores publicly if a district’s sample size is too small.

The 2025-2026 school calendar was approved at last night’s BOE meeting. Next year’s calendar was more challenging than usual due to the timing of holidays. This calendar closely aligns with C-O BOCES, and significant thought went into balancing state requirements, national holidays, appropriate reserve snow days, and quality professional development. Below are a few key highlights.

2025-2026 School Calendar Highlights:

  • Christmas break will again be two weeks long, consistent across the county.
  • There is only one Superintendent’s Conference Day before the start of school. Due to the extended Christmas break, adjustments were necessary to the start and end dates of the school year. The administrative team will prioritize opening day to minimize meeting time and maximize classroom preparation for teachers and staff.
  • Because of the two-week Christmas break, Thanksgiving week will include a full day of school on Monday.
  • Given this winter’s weather challenges, next year’s calendar includes one additional reserve snow day, bringing the total to six.

Weedsport Jr-Sr High School Presents: Little Shop of Horrors
Show Dates: March 14th & 15th, 2025, at 7:00 PM
Location: Weedsport Jr-Sr High School Auditorium
Tickets: $8 at the door or purchase online at https://www.ticketsource.us/weedsport-jr-sr-little-shop-of-horrors
About the Show:
Little Shop of Horrors is a rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman. Based on the 1960 film, it tells the darkly comedic story of Seymour Krelborn, a shy and socially awkward young man working in a failing flower shop owned by Mr. Mushnik. One day, Seymour discovers a mysterious plant during a total eclipse of the sun and names it Audrey II, after his coworker, Audrey, who he secretly loves.
As Seymour nurtures Audrey II, he soon realizes that the plant is no ordinary plant. It feeds on human blood and quickly grows larger and more demanding, turning Seymour’s life upside down. With Audrey II’s growing appetite and influence, Seymour finds himself trapped in a dangerous bargain that could cost him everything he holds dear. The plant manipulates him into making morally questionable choices in exchange for success, wealth, and the love of Audrey.
Set in Skid Row, the show blends elements of comedy, horror, and the music of the 1960s, with unforgettable songs like Suddenly Seymour, Feed Me (Git It), and Somewhere That’s Green. As Seymour’s rise to fame and fortune accelerates, he must grapple with the price of ambition and the dangerous consequences of making deals with a monstrous plant. The show is filled with vibrant, Motown-inspired tunes, laugh-out-loud moments, and unexpected twists that keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
Audiences will enjoy a mix of catchy songs, quirky characters, and suspenseful plot twists while witnessing the life of Audrey II—a plant with a big personality and a deadly secret.
Cast:
Seymour Krelborn – Jack Hopkins
Seymour is the protagonist, a nerdy and meek young man who stumbles upon Audrey II and, against his better judgment, becomes entangled in its dark schemes. Despite his ambition, he must confront the moral cost of his decisions.
Audrey – Abby Bizzozero
Audrey is a sweet but insecure woman working alongside Seymour at the flower shop. She dreams of a better life and yearns for Seymour’s love, though she is trapped in a toxic relationship with Orin, a sadistic dentist.
Audrey II (Voice) – Ivy Miller
Audrey II is the villain of the show, a talking plant that manipulates Seymour into feeding it human blood. With a deep, commanding voice, Audrey II has an insidious charisma that makes it a powerful and frightening presence.
Mr. Mushnick – Ethan Cook
Mr. Mushnick is the owner of the flower shop who is struggling to make ends meet. He’s opportunistic and often gruff but becomes more interested in the success that Seymour and Audrey II bring to the shop.
Orin Scrivello, DDS – John Anderson
Orin is Audrey’s sadistic, egotistical boyfriend, a dentist with a violent streak. He takes pleasure in torturing people, especially Audrey, and is one of the show’s more flamboyant and outrageous characters.
Chiffon – Jayden Hahn
Ronnette – Makenzie Crytzer-Shurant
Crystal – Kennedy Harmon
These three characters form the Greek chorus of the show, providing commentary and guiding the audience through the plot. They also sing some of the show’s most iconic songs, adding energy and flair to the story with their Motown-style harmonies.

Boys’ Indoor Track & Field: Dexter Barnhart stepped into the leadership role for the boys’ team this season. His sport knowledge and natural instincts were a great asset to the team. On the track, Dexter qualified for sectionals in the 600m and took 6th place overall.

Girls’ Indoor Track & Field: Maddy Kepple has been a versatile athlete, competing in five different events throughout the season. Trying high jump for a couple practices at the end of season, she narrowly missed out on qualifying height for sectionals. After stepping in as an alternate, Maddy’s stellar performance resulted in the girls 4×200 placing at the league meet. Maddy always has a positive attitude and is a great teammate.

Girls’ Basketball: Keegan led the Wolverines to a perfect 9-0 record in the month of January. She led the team in scoring with 17 points per game, 3-point percentage at over 40%, free-throw percentage at over 75%, and rebounding at over 8 per game during that stretch. Off the court, she attends the New Visions Medical program, preparing students for careers in the medical field.

Boys’ Basketball: Alex Sorci has been the best shooter on this year’s team and the most improved player in the entire program. This season he tied a school record for made 3’s in a season with 61.

Boys’ Bowling: Cayden Warren made drastic improvements over the course of January. I also noticed the amount of work he was putting into his game to improve. He took advice from others well and used it to better himself. He kept a positive attitude and encouraged everyone around him.

Girls’ Bowling: Eris Clark worked hard throughout the last month of the season. She pushed to get better, and it showed in how she bowled. She did a great job in her first year and was a great teammate, often helping others through emotional struggles.

Swimming & Diving: Makenzie Crytzer-Shurant was a leader on the Swim team this season, serving a team captain.  She qualified for the boys’ Section 3 swim meet in the 200 Individual medley, posting a best time at the sectional meet, she was also a member of the 400 Freestyle at the sectional meet.  Her hard work and dedication to the swim program was always evident. She is an amazing teammate and a fierce competitor.
