Boys’ Indoor Track & Field: Dexter Barnhart stepped into the leadership role for the boys’ team this season. His sport knowledge and natural instincts were a great asset to the team. On the track, Dexter qualified for sectionals in the 600m and took 6th place overall.

Girls’ Indoor Track & Field: Maddy Kepple has been a versatile athlete, competing in five different events throughout the season. Trying high jump for a couple practices at the end of season, she narrowly missed out on qualifying height for sectionals. After stepping in as an alternate, Maddy’s stellar performance resulted in the girls 4×200 placing at the league meet. Maddy always has a positive attitude and is a great teammate.

Girls’ Basketball: Keegan led the Wolverines to a perfect 9-0 record in the month of January. She led the team in scoring with 17 points per game, 3-point percentage at over 40%, free-throw percentage at over 75%, and rebounding at over 8 per game during that stretch. Off the court, she attends the New Visions Medical program, preparing students for careers in the medical field.

Boys’ Basketball: Alex Sorci has been the best shooter on this year’s team and the most improved player in the entire program. This season he tied a school record for made 3’s in a season with 61.

Boys’ Bowling: Cayden Warren made drastic improvements over the course of January. I also noticed the amount of work he was putting into his game to improve. He took advice from others well and used it to better himself. He kept a positive attitude and encouraged everyone around him.

Girls’ Bowling: Eris Clark worked hard throughout the last month of the season. She pushed to get better, and it showed in how she bowled. She did a great job in her first year and was a great teammate, often helping others through emotional struggles.

Swimming & Diving: Makenzie Crytzer-Shurant was a leader on the Swim team this season, serving a team captain.  She qualified for the boys’ Section 3 swim meet in the 200 Individual medley, posting a best time at the sectional meet, she was also a member of the 400 Freestyle at the sectional meet.  Her hard work and dedication to the swim program was always evident. She is an amazing teammate and a fierce competitor.

Boys’ Indoor Track & Field: Christian LaValley he has set multiple PR’s in his events so far. Is always willing to stay late to work on events to get better. A great asset to the team.

Girls’ Indoor Track & Field: Adelyn Gross placed in PV two meets in a row, jumped up a full foot from the spring, is in multiple events, and always has a positive attitude.

Girls’ Basketball: In her senior year, Ayla stepped into an increased role and handled it very well. She leads the team with a 50% shooting percentage and brings guard-like playmaking ability to the forward position. Off the court, she is heavily involved in the school’s journalism program and is also performing an internship in an elementary classroom. 5

Boys’ Basketball: Mason Kocur has grown his game over the past few seasons and has become our most versatile and reliable player. He is currently leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and minutes played. His quiet lead by example approach is perfect for what our team needs this year.

Boys’ Bowling: Kaiden Eipp – Kaiden shows up ready to work at every practice. He is driven and consistently puts up competitive scores. He pushes the rest of his teammates to improve and works with them to get them ready for matches.

Girls’ Bowling: Riley Tomaszewski – Riley is consistently putting up good scores and has been a leader. She has stepped up in her first year to become a key part of the team. She is willing to be coached and works hard to apply any techniques that she is given.

Swimming & Diving: Jeremiah Lasher is a hardworking swimmer, who started the season as fast as he finished the season last year. He is dedicated to improving himself and consistently giving his best at every practice and meet.

We are writing to inform you about an ongoing discussion regarding the possibility of a merger for our football program. At last evening’s Board of Education meeting, we continued the conversation from our December meeting about the future of our football program.

As you may know, Weedsport has experienced declining student enrollment over the past 25 years. Several years ago, this led to the transition from 11-man football to 8-man football, as fielding an 11-man team was no longer feasible. This trend mirrors what many small school districts in upstate New York are experiencing. In light of these challenges, we are considering a potential football program merger with Jordan-Elbridge. Please take a moment to review the rationale and details related to this proposal by visiting our Football Merger FAQ.

At this time, we are still in the discussion phase, and no decision has been made. We are committed to involving our students and community in this dialogue.

To that end, we will be scheduling a meeting with our students in the near future and hosting a virtual community listening session at 6:00 PM on January 22.

During the listening session, we will provide an overview of the proposed merger and invite questions and comments from the community. This will be an excellent opportunity for everyone to get the facts and share feedback.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our exceptional school district. A link to the virtual meeting will be posted on our website and shared through ParentSquare on the morning of January 22.

Varsity Football

Trevor Moon had a very productive month on the football field.  He rushed for 512 yards and 11 touchdowns.  He had 49 tackles this month as well.  Trevor made explosive plays on both sides of the ball and been a leader for the team. Trevor also displays his positive character traits of leadership and dedication by being an active participant in practice every day and a model student-athlete off the field.

Varsity Volleyball

The Varsity Volleyball Student Athlete of the Month for October is Megan House. Megan has led the team to a 7-2 record in the month of October and set the Weedsport single season record for assists. As of the end of October Megan also leads all of Class C in assists with 402 and aces with 74 total. She helped to lead the team to a #3 seed in sectionals and a first round home win.

Varsity Field Hockey

Varsity Field Hockey’s Athlete of the Month is Jordan Powers. In the second half of the season, Jordan has become a force to be reckoned with on defense. The right side of defense is the offense’s strong side – but you would not know it. Jordan stopped countless breakaways and also carried the ball to midfield many times to start our offense. She is deceptively quick, keeps her stick down to disrupt the offense and works hard in practice.

Boys’ Cross Country

Tayson Kepple is the most improved runner who strives to do his best in practice and meets. He is respectful and supportive of his teammates. In the last few meets during October, Tayson’s continued effort has allowed him to be successful and a positive role model on the team.

Girls’ Cross Country

Anna Lafler is October student-athlete of the month for the girls’ varsity cross country team. Anna consistently strived to be her best. She is conscientious of her finish times and seeks solutions to improve. Anna has also responded to minor setbacks during the season by competing and accepting the challenges associated with racing.
