Fellow Wolverines,

We have some exciting news to share about our athletic offerings.  Weedsport will be moving JV and Varsity volleyball to the fall season.  I wanted to explain the rationale behind this difficult decision so that you are aware of the district’s reasoning.

  • The New York Public High School Athletic Association recognizes volleyball as a fall sport.  Winter volleyball is not played outside of Section 3.
  • There are only 3 class C schools remaining in the winter season which would force us to play larger schools and travel longer distances.
  • This move allows us to play more “like-sized” schools.
  • During the winter season, our students in other sports will be able to end practices earlier due to gym availability (less 7:30-9:30 PM practices).
  • Modified volleyball will still be in the winter season, allowing opportunities for our younger student-athletes to try multiple sports.

We understand this change will impact some more than others but feel it was necessary to make everyone aware.  We hope this decision will allow as many students the opportunity to be involved in athletics as possible.  Be on the lookout for a Parent Square in July for more information on fall athletics.  Thank you and GO WOLVERINES!

Each year, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) honors high school senior swimmers with an exemplary academic standing accompanying their accomplishments in the pool through the Academic All-America program. This year’s list of student’s selected for this recognition has been released and Weedsport’s Jasmine Nguyen and Brayden Mitchell have both earned 2023-2024 NISCA Academic All-America distinctions.

In order to be eligible for consideration to be a NISCA Academic All-America athlete, students must meet rigorous requirements. In addition to excelling in their aquatic sport, they must also have be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 3.750 or 93.7500% equivalent grade average, that has also been lettered in their high school program (swimming, diving or water polo).

“Both Jasmine and Brayden achieved amazing things during their swim season this year, competing strong and consistently in a sport they exhibit an undeniable passion for,” said WCSD swimming and diving coach Jill King. “They set ambitious goals for themselves this season. Not only did they both exceed those goals, but they also both scored points for the team at sectionals helping with a solid finish overall.”

NISCA is a professional organization that supports High School coaches of all aquatic sports. They are dedicated to coaches’ education and athlete recognition through the All-America programs. In addition, NISCA allows opportunities for coaches to network and exchange knowledge and experience.

Over 353,936 students are involved in aquatics at the high school level in over 17,454 programs for boys’ and girls’, with only approximately 2% of these students are recognized as high school All American’s.
NICSA’s All-America full lists by year can be found at: https://niscaonline.org/index.php/award-programs/academic-all-america.

February 2024 Student-Athletes of the Month

Varsity Boys’ Basketball: Lucio wrapped up a 4 year varsity career in outstanding fashion. He led the team in scoring, assists, steals, and minutes played. He was named by league coaches as OHSL Patriot National Player of the Year. His play making, point guard play and leadership will be greatly missed!

Varsity Girls’ Basketball: In February, Mallory led the team in rebounds and free throws made per game, and was second in points, assists, and three-pointers made per game. As a leader in her third year on the team, she used her experience to bring a positive and competitive energy to the program every day.

Varsity Swimming & Diving: Swimming and Diving would like to recognize both Jasmine Nguyen and Avery Tomandl as Athletes of the month for February. Both of these young ladies achieved amazing things during their swim season this year, competing alongside boys in a sport they love. Avery qualified at the boys’ standard in the 100 Backstroke this season which was a goal she had for herself, she dropped that 100 backstroke time further at sectionals. Jasmine set a goal in the 500 Free which she achieved during the season of breaking 7 minutes. At sectionals, she dropped even more time earning a 12th place finish. Both girls swam the 100 Fly at the sectional meet and both scored points for the team at sectionals helping with a solid second place finish overall.

Varsity Bowling:

Keegan Montreal: Keegan was a stalwart on the bowling team. She did a great job giving the team consistency and keeping a positive attitude throughout her time in bowling. She was a great role model for the younger athletes.

Jordan Guy: In the month of February, Jordan bowled very well having the second highest average on the team during sectionals. He averaged 180 over the course of 6 games and finished in 4th place in the league doubles tournament.

Volleyball: Volleyball Student Athlete of the Month is Emma Stephens. As the teams primary libero, Emma led the team in digs for the season with a total of 191, which is the second most in a single season in Weedsport program history. She also finished her career at 3rd all time in career digs. She registered 102 total assists filling in as the setter for several matches throughout the season. Finally, Emma also led the team in aces with a total of 53 on the season thanks to her ability to control her serve placement.

The Weedsport Varsity Bowling team wrapped up a phenomenal season, showcasing exceptional teamwork and individual talent.

The boys secured a co-championship title in their league, boasting an impressive 13-2 record throughout the regular season. Their dedication shone through as they shattered two school records on January 30th against Homer. The team bowled a record-breaking high game of 998 and a record-high 3-game total of 2825.

Individually, Ethan Reitema consistently impressed. He rolled a 279 against APW, setting a new record for the highest game during a match. Reitema continued his dominance by achieving another record – the highest 3-game series with a remarkable score of 750, also against APW.

The success extended to the OHSL Tournament, with Reitema and Dan Burtless claiming victory in the league doubles tournament and the team of Jordan Guy and Carter McNabb finishing 4th.

The team’s prowess continued at sectionals, where they placed a commendable 6th out of 15 teams in Division 2. Further solidifying their achievements, they secured a 3rd place finish out of 10 teams in Class C/D.

Individually, Reitema’s exceptional bowling propelled him to a 4th place finish in the Section 3 individual shootout, while teammate Daniel Burtless secured a well-deserved 16th place finish.

“Fantastic” hardly seems enough to describe this season. The Weedsport Varsity Boy’s Bowling team displayed remarkable skill, teamwork, and dedication throughout the year. Congratulations to the players and everyone who contributed to this incredible season!
