The Weedsport Central School District is looking for additional input on the eight possible logo/nickname choices that were presented to the public on June 26th.

Please click on this link, or scroll down, to see the slide deck detailing all options. Using the following criteria as your guide, provide your thoughts on how your idea meets or exceeds the criteria. For example, provide more rationale as to how unique a logo/nickname idea is or how easily it could be seen on uniforms. The opportunity to do such runs from June 28–July 7 and your thoughts can be sent to the following email address: logo@weedsport.org.

  • COLOR SCHEME MATCH: The logo/nickname should complement the school’s colors.
  • RECOGNIZABLE: The logo/nickname should be easily recognized and scalable ensuring clarity and legibility at different sizes so that it does not lose its visual impact.
  • UNIQUENESS: The logo/nickname should be distinctive and memorable. It should set the school apart from others. It should not be generic or similar to existing logos and nicknames in the area.
  • IDENTITY & VALUES: The logo/nickname should convey a positive and inspiring message. Think about what the school stands for and how it wants to be perceived by students, staff, and the wider community.
  • RELEVANCE: The logo/nickname should be relevant to the school and community.
  • TIMELESSNESS: The logo/nickname should stand the test of time and remain relevant and timeless for many years to come. Avoid logos/nicknames that will become outdated.
  • SIMPLICITY: A high quality logo should be simple and easily recognizable. Avoid using overly intricate design/font features that make it difficult to decipher or understand.
  • MEMORABILITY: The logo/nickname should be memorable and leave a lasting impression on viewers. It should stand out and be easily identifiable among other logos.
  • VERSATILITY: The logo should be adaptable and work well across various mediums and formats such as digital platforms, print materials, uniforms, and signage.
  • BALANCE & PROPORTION: The logo’s size and arrangement of different design components should be visually harmonious and pleasing to the eye.

Thank you in advance for your contribution!

Dear Weedsport Educational Community,

It is with mixed emotions that I address you today, bidding farewell to this notable educational community for which I have served as Superintendent of Schools for the last 18 years and that which I have been a part of since the fall of 1989 when I began my teaching career as a 1st grade teacher at Weedsport Elementary School.

In the interim from September 1989 through my retirement date of January 1, 2024, I will have had the great fortune to have worked with and for some incredibly memorable colleagues and Board of Education members. They have enriched my life beyond my ability to express appreciation in words or deeds and for such I will always be indebted.

As I embark on a new chapter in my journey, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the entire educational community—teachers, staff, students, parents, and stakeholders—for your unwavering belief in the power of education. Most importantly, I wish to thank my immediate and extended family, and my wife in particular, which has been the greatest support system throughout my years as the District’s educational leader.

Thank you for the memories, the growth, and the countless moments of pride. Farewell, but not goodbye. Our paths may diverge, but the impact we have made together will endure.

Respectfully,

Shaun A. O’Connor

Superintendent of Schools

************************************************************************************

To all,

I hope this message finds you well. As representatives of the Weedsport Central District Board of Education, it is with mixed emotions that we communicate the retirement of Mr. Shaun O’Connor, who has been an invaluable member of our educational community for the past 34 years.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. O’Connor has demonstrated unwavering dedication and commitment to our district in various roles, including teacher, athletic director, coach, and business official. Notably, he has served as Superintendent for 18 of those years, providing exceptional leadership during both prosperous and challenging times.

Under Mr. O’Connor’s guidance, our district has weathered numerous trials and emerged stronger than ever. His steadfastness, resilience, and innovative thinking have allowed us to navigate uncharted waters, spearhead new and exciting initiatives, and remain true to the rich heritage of the Weedsport community. We are truly grateful for his remarkable contributions.

Throughout his tenure, he has successfully led numerous capital improvement projects, resulting in a campus that is both safe and secure, while also exuding beauty. These initiatives have greatly enhanced the learning environment for our students. We recognize the tremendous impact he has had on the lives of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader Weedsport community.

It is with mixed emotions that we accept Mr. O’Connor’s resignation for the purpose of retirement. While we understand and support his decision to embark on a new chapter in life, we cannot help but acknowledge the void his departure will create within our district. We are, however, confident that the solid foundation he has helped establish will guide us as we continue our pursuit of academic excellence and community engagement.

As we bid farewell to Mr. O’Connor, we invite the faculty, staff, and community members to join us in celebrating his remarkable career and to extend our warmest wishes for a fulfilling retirement. We encourage you to share your memories, stories, and well wishes as a testament to the impact he has made on our lives and the Weedsport Central District.

Please join us in expressing our deepest appreciation and best regards to Mr. O’Connor for his immeasurable contributions and outstanding dedication. We wish him a retirement filled with joy, good health, and countless new adventures.

Respectfully,

Colleen Borza, President

Weedsport Central School Board of Education

As the 2022-23 school year comes to a close, the Cayuga County Health Department has made plans for the 2023-24 school year by offering back-to-school vaccination clinics for children in need of immunizations required for school attendance.

The hope is that this advance notice for families will alleviate unnecessary school absences due to a lack of New York State mandated vaccinations. Please see the flyers below, in both English and Spanish, for details on where and when these clinics will be held and how to make an appointment.

All Weedsport third graders recently visited the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES MakerSpace; an environment that allows students to create and explore through hands-on learning.Third grade students create models depicting butterfly metamorphosis.

Students first learned about the metamorphosis cycle of a butterfly. Then, they developed their own models to show each of the four stages of metamorphosis. Students additionally wrote a summary report and presented that report in front of a green screen.

“All students and teachers had a wonderful time, where the planning, filming, working, and fun were nonstop,” said third grade teacher Lynn Cheche Baker.

Once everything was created and filmed, students connected their video reports to a QR code, and attached those codes to their models. Once scanned, the video plays on your mobile device.

The Weedsport Central School District is keeping its logo/nickname survey open to community members through Tuesday, June 6th at 9 a.m. The District has received many survey responses but wants to ensure that everyone has a chance to participate. In an effort to reach as many District stakeholders as possible, there will now be two ways to submit ideas:

1. Send an email to logo@weedsport.org detailing your logo/nickname idea and how that idea connects to Weedsport,

OR

2. Follow this link, or scroll down to fill out the survey within Google Forms

The Weedsport Central School District has reached the point where we need choose a new logo/nickname as directed by the New York State Education Department. We are appreciative and understanding of the history that is tied to our logo and nickname and the passion our school community feels toward each. Many of us have deep memories tied to victories and moments of triumph from our student-athletes over the years. This does not change any of the achievements made on various playing fields. However, we have an obligation to follow the decision and we will honor the mandate as written by our state officials.

It is the goal of school officials to deploy an approach that will move our District forward with compliance while employing a positive and unifying process. To that end, our current school body needs to have a voice in this process as we seek to understand how to best represent all of our students moving forward. We value the opinions and feelings of those who call Weedsport home, and the students who currently walk our school hallways need to have a role in how our search for a new logo and nickname moves forward.

While we want our current students to have a significant role in the decision-making process, we intend to offer the opportunity for all stakeholders to have input. This would include alumni as well as school and community members, and, obviously, students who will all have an equal opportunity in the idea submission proceeding.

The structure for arriving at a final decision will involve the following steps:

1. Distribution and submission of a survey open to the past and present Weedsport school stakeholders inviting ideas for a new logo and nickname.

2. Review of student-submitted logo and nickname suggestions by student government organizations representing the student body at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each representative organization identifies their top 3 choices for further consideration.

3. A steering committee consisting of educational stakeholders – students, faculty, administration, parents, alumni, coaching staff – evaluates the submitted logo and nickname suggestions from alumni and school and community members as well as student choices to identify final options.

4. The Board of Education will make a final determination of the logo and nickname based on the collected input from the steering committee.

It is wholly understood that we will not find a universally accepted choice for a logo and nickname as individual suggestions are delivered with passion and hopefulness. However, through this process it is our District’s ambition to finalize a logo and nickname that represents our school colors of green and white, is linked to our Weedsport community, and offers a unique illustration of the pride our educational stakeholders possess for Weedsport Central School District.

Congratulations to the below student-athletes for being recognized as Weedsport’s May athletes of the month! Take a look at what their coaches had to say about their hard work.

Baseball – Andrew Seward

Andrew has been great for the team. He has a .429 batting average, 14 RBI’s, and 9 stolen bases. That is not including his presence on the mound. He is not only an integral piece for our team’s success, but also a great leader, person and student.

Softball – Mallory Brown

Mallory clinched the win over Little Falls in sectional play, with a walk off homerun sent over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the 7th inning. Mallory recorded three triples in the month of May vs. top seed Jordan-Elbridge, Port Byron and Fabius-Pompey and also led our team in stolen bases.

Golf – Anthony Tortorici

Anthony competed in every match and averaged the lowest individual score this month, including a career best 39 in a win against Bishop Grimes.

Boys Track & Field – Sam Holden

Sam stepped up in everything we asked of him. He is now running the 4×800, straight 800m, 200m and the 4×400.

Girls Track & Field – Elena Amodei

Elena has been a Swiss Army knife for the ladies track & field team this year— running everything from the 100m to 800m and being the only member on all three relay teams. In May, her times improved in all events, highlighted by a 1:11 split in the 1600m relay under the lights at ESM. As the sole female senior, Elena has been a constant leader and motivator for the team and was instrumental in this group of nine pulling out several wins this season. Adored by her teammates and highly respected by her coaches, Elena will be greatly missed when she graduates this June.

Andrew Seward is named a May student-athlete of the month. Mallory Brown is named a May student-athlete of the month. Anthony Tortorici is named a May student-athlete of the month. Sam Holden is named a May student-athlete of the month. Elena Amodei is named a May student-athlete of the month.
