Field Trip to Harvard Medical School

Last Monday, students in Mrs. Hannon's Intro to Medical Science class took a field trip to the Harvard Medical School Med Science Simulation Lab. While at this state of the art simulation lab, students got the opportunity to practice with laparoscopic surgery training equipment (same equipment surgeons used to practice), meet people from several medical professions to discuss their career paths, were "stop the bleed" certified, and were able to put their diagnostic skills to use as they treated a trauma patient during a live simulation. They worked together to treat their patient who had just been shot by a stray bullet while at a gas station. They applied the skills that they have been working on throughout the year in order to stop the bleeding, analyze X-ray to diagnose a collapsed lung, relieve pressure from the collapsed lung using a catheter, and insert an IO (IV into the bone) to improve blood pressure, all while keeping the patient calm and informed about each procedure. These hardworking WHS seniors shined during the simulation as they used their communications skills to work together toward a common goal. They enjoy the hands-on approach to learning this course offers and had a great time putting their skills to use at the Harvard Medical School Med Science Simulation Lab.
