Second and third-grade students were able to participate in the Safe Routes to School program this week. During the program, students heard safety tips from a safe routes representative as well as a Watertown police officer. Along with them and parent volunteers students were able to practice crossing the street safely using a crosswalk and what to do if they dropped something in the street - continue to cross, check to see if the street is clear and then retrieve the object with their hand in the air to better their chances of being seen. Students also practiced maneuvering a parking lot by using the “sneak and peek” strategy. Students were also shown how to use 3 senses to see if a car is backing up - seeing the reverse lights, hearing the engine running and smelling the exhaust.
PreK, K, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th will be participating in similar programs before the year ends.
