John Freitag, President of the School District of Washington’s Board of Education, has achieved Master Board Member Certification from the Missouri School Boards’ Association. He now has Advanced and Master Certification.
The board member certification program established by MSBA recognizes school board members who choose to complete the additional professional development requirements beyond the 18 ½ hours of training required by the Outstanding Schools Act of 1993 for new board members.
Ongoing professional development for school board members is vital to maximize their contribution to the school board and superintendent governance team. Each June at the Igniting Great Ideas Summit, MSBA recognizes school board members for continuing their learning beyond the state-required CBM Essential Training for new board members.
MSBA offers Advanced, Master and Distinguished Certification.
To achieve Master Certification, board members must earn MSBA Essential and Advanced certification, complete annual refresher training requirements through MSBA, earn 12 additional credits, attend two MSBA core meetings; at least one in year of application, read two books related to education or board governance topics from the MSBA Booklist for Reading Requirement, and write a brief two- to three-page reflection paper discussing what they learned in the context of their district and board service.
Freitag, who currently is serving his third term on the School District of Washington’s Board of Education after first being elected in 2015, will be recognized during the MSBA Igniting Great Ideas Summit on June 11-12 in St. Charles.
Fellow Board of Education members Kevin Blackburn and Jason Oesterly also have certifications through MSBA. Blackburn has Advanced and Master Certification. Oesterly has Advanced, Master and Distinguished Certification.
