Washington High School Sophomore Taylor Brown Named Washington Missourian Female Athlete of the Year
Washington High School softball and basketball player Taylor Brown has been named the Washington Missourian Female Athlete of the Year.
It was a sophomore year to remember for Brown, who led the WHS softball program to the Class 4 state championship with a 32-5 record, the school’s first team state title in 48 years and the second in school history.
Brown had a dominant season for the Blue Jays, posting a record of 18-3 in the pitching circle with a 1.25 earned-run average. In 128.2 innings of work, she allowed 31 runs, 23 earned, on 54 hits with 57 walks and 260 strikeouts. She set school records for wins and strikeouts.
At the plate, Brown had a batting average of .474 (54 hits in 114 at-bats) with an on-base percentage of .542 and a slugging percentage of .675. She had 19 doubles, 42 RBIs and scored 20 runs.
Brown was named the GAC Central Player of the Year and earned first-team all-state and all-district honors. She was named to the GAC all-academic team. She also was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association all region team for Region 1.
“Taylor is one of, if not, the best and most complete players I have ever coached,” said WHS Softball Coach Philip King. “In addition to all of her on-the-field accomplishments, Taylor is a leader and amazing teammate. She shows her leadership through both actions and words. Taylor works hard to be the best at everything she does.
“Even though she is just a sophomore, Taylor has arguably already had the most successful career for any softball player that has attended Washington High School,” King said. “She has five single season school records in softball (and) is also very close to setting four more career school records.”
On the basketball court, Brown was a second-team GAC Central all-conference selection, averaging 6.3 points, 6 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.5 assists per game. She showed her versatility by being a presence on both ends of the floor inside the lane and also had the ability handle the ball and shoot from the perimeter.
