The School District of Washington’s Board of Education held a Special Board meeting on Monday morning, October 19, to discuss the current secondary (7-12) schedule and any potential changes or improvements.
Last week, committee meetings were held to analyze the data and discuss the transition to green (full attendance) and other ideas to improve the current schedule. Due to recent spikes in COVID-19 positivity and quarantines at the high school, the District will remain in Scenario 2, Hybrid Model of Learning for grades 7-12.
However, improvements to this schedule will be made, effective October 26, 2020, the first day of the second quarter.
By pivoting to an Alternating 3/2 hybrid schedule, we will gain instructional time on campus with both A day and B day students. We will adjust our cleaning protocols, continue with the requirement of face coverings, and manage the buildings in the safest manner possible. Academically, this schedule will provide more continuity for both teachers and students, both organizationally and instructionally.
An alternating A/B (3/2) is exactly as it sounds. Each school day alternates from A day to B day in succession. The flow is that of a Learn/Practice/Learn/Practice approach.
A days are for students last name A-K. B days are for students last name L-Z.
We have learned a great deal over the course of the first quarter. These improvements will be beneficial to both our students and our teachers and until which time we can transfer into the green level.
Elementary will remain in full attendance, as we are in Scenario 2 Hybrid Yellow. The hybrid schedule is being improved for the purposes I described. If the elementary level had to return to the hybrid, they would also follow this improved schedule.
We are “all in” K-6 and certainly hope to stay that way!
