Washington High School is offering a sports officiating class, a physical education elective, to students.
According to instructor Kym Blankenship, students learn rules, demonstrate mechanics, how to keep the score book, and work with officials and coaches in the community to gain further understanding of the sport.
The class involves community speaking, presentations to their peers, and practical and written assessments.
On Wednesday, March 27, longtime area high school basketball official Brad Mitchell spoke to the class about his knowledge and expertise on basketball officiating. He answered questions, encouraged the students to get involved, and outlined the emotional and financial benefits of becoming an official.
