Football Blue Jays Fall to Liberty; Win Two Home Games

WHS FootballWashington High School’s varsity football team hit the road for a GAC Central football contest at Wentzville Liberty on Friday, September 22.

The Blue Jays (2-3 overall and 1-2 in the GAC Central) fell short in the game, 49-21.

With the game tied 7-7 after one quarter, Liberty (4-1, 2-1) outscored the Blue Jays 36-6 over the second and third quarters combined to grab a 43-13 advantage heading into the fourth period.

Washington’s three touchdowns came on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Kassebaum to Ty Thurmon in the first quarter, a 48-yard pass from Kassebaum to Nick Lucido in the third quarter and a two-yard pass from Kassebaum to Landon Boston in the fourth quarter.

Kassebaum was 12-23 passing for 172 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also carried the ball 18 times for 62 yards. Lucido had six catches for 95 yards and one touchdown. Thurmon added three catches for 45 yards and one touchdown. Boston rushed for 52 yards on 26 carries and scored a touchdown.

Alec Pecka led Washington’s defense with seven solo tackles and one assist. Syrus Pate added four solos and one assist. Jacob Bina, Hayden Burns and Thurmon each had three solo tackles.

Washington’s two victories this season have both come at home over Union 21-14 and Ft. Zumwalt North, 28-24. It was the first time the Blue Jays have beaten Ft. Zumwalt North since 2012.

Washington will host Ft. Zumwalt East for Homecoming on Friday, September 29, at 7 p.m.
