WHS Winter GuardAn exhibition performance of the Washington High School Winter Guard took place on Friday, April 5, at the WHS Blue Jay Gymnasium.

A large crowd turned out for the Friends and Family Show.

Winter Guard has been at Washington High School for over 20 years. It’s the color guard from marching band (dance, flags, rifles and sabers) performing in a gymnasium to recorded music. There is usually some props, backdrops and a floor covering that matches the theme of the show.

Washington High School’s Pride of Washington Winter Guard competed at the MCCGA (Mid-Continent Color Guard Association) Regionals on Saturday, April 6, in Springfield. Washington received a bronze medal and scored 82.02.

“Most groups we compete against have been in this classification for years and do not medal and in just one season, our students did it,” said WHS Color Guard Director Erin Shaul. “After being promoted last season to Scholastic A class and winning a gold medal they set forth on a path that was an uphill battle. The students have put in countless hours of practice to master their craft and their efforts paid off.”
