Washington High School softball player Christine Gerling is the KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week.
Gerling, a freshman pitcher/utility player, has made a big impact this season both at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle.
At the plate, Gerling has a batting average of .456 (31 hits in 68 at bats) with three home runs, eight doubles, 25 RBIs (sixth most in a single season in program history), 16 runs, an on-base percentage of .486 and a slugging percentage of .735.
In the circle, Gerling has a record of 6-3 with a 1.36 earned-run average. In 61.2 innings of work, she’s allowed 22 runs, 12 earned, on 41 hits with 23 walks and 71 strikeouts. She pitched a no-hitter against Ft. Zumwalt North.
"Christine has been one of our best hitters and has helped lead the way in the circle with Taylor Brown,” said Washington Head Softball Coach Philip King. “Christine is very coachable and always works hard. When not pitching, she has helped us at shortstop and third base.”
Fellow freshman pitcher Taylor Brown is 11-1 on the season with a 0.85 ERA.
Washington has a record of 19-5 and is the top seed for this week’s Class 5 District 2 Tournament at Lakeview Park.
