The School District of Washington is hosting a district wide food drive during the month of February to help celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the food backpack program, "Fighting Hunger & Fueling Minds."
Fighting Hunger & Fueling Minds 10-Year Anniversary Food Drive
Fighting Hunger & Fueling Minds began in February 2013 with the goal to support students experiencing food insecurity. Since then, over 35,000 bags of food have been provided.
The program has grown and is a collaborative effort between schools, community organizations, churches, and individuals.
Fighting Hunger & Fueling Minds partners with Loving Hearts Outreach as a place to store and pack their food bags. Each week, Washington High School Missouri Options students pack the food bags. Community volunteers then deliver the food bags to schools.
During the month of February, a district wide food drive will take place at all schools. Each school is given a specific item to collect. The school with the most items wins bragging rights, along with the chance to wear jeans for a week. The school’s food drive can include students, staff and parents.
Money donations to the program always are accepted as well.
