Washington High School varsity girls soccer played their home opener against Ft. Zumwalt South on Thursday evening, April 4.
Ft. Zumwalt South, three-time defending Class 3 state champions, got all it could handle from the Lady Jays.
The visiting Bulldogs broke a 3-3 tie late in the game for a 4-3 victory over Washington.
The game was back-and-forth all the way and there were times were the Lady Jays controlled the play. The score was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Kloey O’Connell registered one goal and two assists for Washington. Sammy Williams added one goal and one assist. Madison Moore had one goal.
Nora Mendoza was in goal for Washington and made some big plays, including a diving save on a FZS breakaway.
Washington, coached by Jalynda Vodnansky and assisted by Chris Lanemann and Brittany Nothum, had solid play throughout their lineup.
Addie Vodnansky, Presley Kiser and Avery Lanemann helped control the tempo in the midfield. Ellie Sneed and Susie Heggemann anchored the defense.
Other players on the varsity roster who will play important roles this season are Karisa Latcher, Lilly Thornton, Natalie Vogel, Addyson Meyer, Ava Staples, Madi Sperry, Taylor Wienstroer, Pyper Kiser, Jersey Tinsley and Gabrielle Langford. Chloe Mueller is the backup goalie.
The home opener also was the debut of the new scoreboard at Washington High School.
