Competing at the District 2 Girls Wrestling Tournament at Holt High School on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, Washington placed fifth in the team standings, crowned two district champions and had three wrestlers qualify for the state championships.
With nine wrestlers competing, the Lady Jays accumulated 90 points to finish in fifth place out of 30 schools scoring in the final team standings.
Holt claimed the district title with 159.5 points. St. Charles placed second with 140.5 points followed by McCluer North with 138.5 points, Francis Howell with 122.5 points and Washington with 90 points.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the MSHSAA State Championships Feb. 20-22 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Washington’s district champions were juniors Mia Reed and Allison Meyer. Senior Halaina O’Bryant also qualified for state with a third-place finish.
Reed (35-1) cruised through the 110-pound weight class, winning all three of her contested matches by first-period pin. All three of her matches were less than one minute long.
Meyer (36-3) also dominated her weight class at 115 pounds. She won all four of her matches by pin, two in the first period and two in the second period.
Reed and Meyer both will be making their second career appearance at the state meet.
O’Bryant (29-10) notched a third-place finish at 135 pounds, recording a 5-1 record at the district meet. Her only loss came to eventual champion Cassidy Head of St. Charles in the semifinals by a 4-1 decision.
O’Bryant will be making her first career appearance at the state tournament.
Arianna Hill (28-10), a junior, also reached the semifinals for the Lady Jays at 103 pounds, but fell a win short of qualifying for state.
Also competing at the district meet for Washington were freshman Julia Donnelly (18-9) at 120 pounds, sophomore Lindsay Sprung (15-19) at 125 pounds, junior McKenna Deckelman (23-18) at 130 pounds, sophomore Shelby Whitacre (6-14) at 142 pounds, and junior Lauren Donaldson (1-6) at 152 pounds.
