Washington High School Student Victor Hoang Receives Missouri Association of Student Councils Distinguished Student Leader Award
Washington High School senior and Student Council President Victor Hoang recently was awarded the Missouri Association of Student Councils (MASC) Distinguished Student Leader Award.
The award recognizes students who demonstrate superior student council leadership skills and knowledge, based on MASC criteria and evaluation procedures.
Hoang has been highly involved in student council throughout his high school career. He’s been involved at the state level by going to and presenting at conferences and taking part in the summer leadership camp.
“It’s been valuable to have a president that is networking with other leaders outside of our building and bringing back new ideas for our students,” said WHS Student Council Advisor Allison Chaney. “He's definitely exceeded the community service requirement, as he's had over 20 credits of service each semester of high school.”
To become an MASC Distinguished Student Leader, students must be members of their student councils in MASC member schools and graduating at the time they submit their applications. The standards for the Distinguished Student Leader program reflect the core purposes and mission of student councils.
Additionally, the evaluation procedure has been designed so that the bulk of the process takes place at the school level with the results being forwarded to MASC for the final assessment. This facilitates a process that will help students become more proficient in self-assessment practices and better able to organize and build a record of evidence focused on their student council and related leadership activities.
Other requirements for the award include that students must have participated at least two years in their high school student council, must have completed 20 hours of documented community service, must have led one workshop/discussion group at a district, state, national, or MASC Summer Leadership workshops/conference, must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of of 3.0 during their high school career, must maintain an attendance rate of 95 percent, must have no major disciplinary records or infractions as determined by their school, must have attended either a District Convention, MASC State Convention, or MASC Winter Energizer, and must have attended the MASC Summer Leadership Workshop during grades 9-12.
Victor is the son of Vinh Hoang and Thu Ngo. In addition to Student Council and Leadership, he’s involved in Key Club, Interact, Chess Club, International Club and Mu Alpha Theta. He plans to attend a four-year university and major in business management.
