Washington High School softball played its home opener at Lakeview Park on Monday, Aug. 31.
Taking on perennial power Sullivan (Class 3 state runner-up last season), the Lady Jays dropped a 6-5 decision.
Washington rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game 5-5, but Sullivan took the lead back in the top of the sixth and held on for the win.
It was senior night as Washington’s five seniors were recognized; Maddie Holtmeyer, Allie Huddleston, Emma Vodnansky, Hope Ramsey and Emma Riegel. All five seniors were in the starting lineup.
Washington has three juniors on the varsity roster - Denise Heggemann, Kylie McDaniel and Lexi Lewis; three sophomores - Loren Thurmon, Myla Inman and Emily Bruckerhoff; and six freshmen – Kelsie Holtmeyer, Christine Gerling, Taylor Brown, Lacy Monzyk, Lauren Opfer and Maddie Guevara.
Maddie Holtmeyer, a senior, was Washington’s starting pitcher against Sullivan. Gerling and Brown, both freshman, both pitched three innings in relief.
Maddie Holtmeyer reached base three times with two hits and a walk to go with two RBIs and one run.
Vodnansky added one hit, one walk and one run. Ramsey had one hit. Monzyk drew a walk and scored two runs. Inman collected a walk and a RBI. Guevara drew a walk. Lewis scored a run.
Washington won the junior varsity game over Sullivan, 15-3.
The Washington varsity team opened its season Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29, at the Troy Tournament. The Lady Jays lost two one-run games, 2-1 to Hickman and 3-2 to Troy, before falling 6-0 to St. Dominic (Class 3 quarterfinalist last season). Three of their four losses so far this season have been by one run.
