On Monday, Sept. 24, CDR George Howell, the Commanding Officer of the USS Missouri (SSN 780), a submarine stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, along with members of his crew, visited the Washington High School NJROTC program.
The crew gave a presentation about the submarine and how it operates. Most of the hour-long visit was used by answering questions from the Cadets, who were dressed in uniform.
Local veterans also were invited and on hand, as were Washington High School and School District of Washington administrators and board members.
Veterans on hand presented Howell and his crew with a gift for visiting Washington, and the USS Missouri crew presented Master Sgt. Tim Gates, WHS NJROTC instructor, with a plaque.
USS Missouri (SSN-780) is the seventh Virginia-class attack submarine and the fourth ship in the United States Navy named in honor of the State of Missouri.
The 7,800-ton submarine Missouri was built under a joint arrangement between General Dynamics Electric Boat and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News.
Missouri completed her first six-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet on Dec. 20, 2013.
In March 2014, Missouri made an 11-week-long surge deployment in the Northern Atlantic, just three months after her previous deployment and possibly linked to the Ukrainian crisis, which took place in March 2014. The submarine continued to operate with the U.S. 6th fleet in 2015.
On Jan. 26, 2018, Missouri sailed into her new homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from Groton, Connecticut.
