Mason Kauffeld is the KLPW Radio Athlete of the Week.
Kauffeld, a sophomore at Washington High School, qualified for the MSHSAA Swimming Championships, becoming the school’s first-ever state qualifier in boys swimming.
Kauffeld qualified in the 200 IM (Individual medley), finishing in 28th place in a time of 2:09.87 during the Class 1 State Championships Nov. 9 at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters.
It was a busy fall sports season for Kauffeld, who also was a member of the WHS cross country team and was an all-conference performer for the Blue Jays. He was an all-conference performer in both swimming and cross country this fall.
“I think doing two sports really helped me improve at both,” Kauffeld said. “I enjoyed doing both of them. I like challenges, and it was definitely a challenge. But I got used to it.”
