Washington Middle School Wins St. Peter's Festival of Trees Food Drive
Washington Middle School was the winner of the 2018 Community Festival of Trees at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Washington.
The Festival of Trees featured 77 decorated trees with various themes from different schools, churches and community groups in the area.
During the month of December, members of the community had the opportunity to view the trees and vote for their favorite by placing canned goods and other food items under the tree.
The School District of Washington was represented by many different buildings.
In a close race, Washington Middle School ended Washington High School’s nine-year run of consecutive first-place finishes, collecting 1,761 food items. WHS finished in second place with 1,737 items. The difference of 24 food items proved that every item truly counted.
More importantly, a total of 13,312 food items were collected overall, the most in the 10-year history of the Community Festival of Trees and an increase of over 1,000 items from last year.
The donations will be given to local food pantries, including Loving Hearts, St. Francis Borgia Food Pantry and St. Peter’s United Church of Christ Food Pantry.
The pictures below feature all of the donations with Washington Middle School student council officers, Festival of Trees committee members, and representatives from local food pantries.
WMS STUCO officers on hand were Austin Gober, Julia Donnelly, Mya Wardwell, Maddie Grimes and Mark Hensley, along with advisors Dana Brinker and Amanda Nilges.
