  • Speech and Language
  • Motor Skills
  • General Knowledge

  • Vision

Developmental screenings are administered in an interactive manner with the Developmental Indicators for Assessment and Learning - Third Edition (DIAL-3) screening instrument. For children ages four (4) months to three (3) years, screenings are administered with the Ages & Stages Questionnaires - Third Edition (ASQ-3) and are offered at the child's home or at the Early Learning Center.

Developmental Screening Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I have my child screened?
Children rapidly grow and change through the early years, so screening every year until kindergarten entry helps parents know if their child is developing within the normal range for his or her age. Screening also provides parents with information on the individual growth of their child and the early detection of potential delays that may affect later learning. If the screening indicates an area of concern, further evaluation for a child will be recommended.

How long does the screening take?
The entire screening process takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Who will screen my child?
Parents as Teachers provides trained professionals and Parent Educators who have experience working with children. We strive to make each child feel comfortable. The screening program is designed to be a positive learning experience for you and your child.

Who is eligible for a screening?
Any child, age four (4) months to Kindergarten entry, who resides in the School District of Washington, is eligible for a screening.

Will I be present during the screening?
Age four (4) months to three (3) years: Parents are involved in the screening. Age three (3) to Kindergarten entry: Typically, we ask that you wait in our Resource Library and watch your child through an observation window until the screening is complete. However, each child's individual needs are always considered throughout the process.

What happens after the screening?
A staff member will share your child's results with you after the screening is complete. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, share information and express any concerns you may have about your child's development. In addition, several different fun follow-up activities will be provided for you to do with your child.

What if my child needs further evaluation?
If the screening indicates an area of concern, referral for further testing may be recommended. If it is determined that your child is eligible for early intervention services, then we provide guidance through the process to determine a program to help your child learn and succeed.

How much will the screening cost?
Screening is a component of the Parents as Teachers program and there is no cost for any of these services.
