The Washington High School Choral Department has announced that senior Aidan Van Leer has been selected to perform in the prestigious Southwest American Choral Directors Association (SWACDA) Regional Choir.
Van Leer’s achievement comes after a rigorous audition process, where a total of 1,136 singers competed for a coveted spot in the choir from six different states. The region includes Missouri, Colorado, Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. Out of the auditions, 656 singers were accepted to make up all four choirs.
The audition process demanded exceptional skill and talent from the participants. Van Leer had to showcase his musical prowess by singing two scales and performing "America" (My Country 'Tis of Thee) without musical accompaniment. Additionally, he performed a minute-long prepared piece, demonstrating his vocal artistry and dedication to his craft. He was scored by a panel of three judges in a blind audition format.
“Aidan’s inclusion in the SWACDA Regional Choir is a testament to his outstanding musical abilities and hard work. He will be joining 268 other singers in the 10-12 mixed category, out of 614 applicants. This opportunity not only highlights Aidan's talent, but also serves as a source of immense pride for Washington High School,” said WHS Director of Choirs Jessie Patterson. “Aidan is the first student, to our knowledge, from our school to represent us in the SWACDA Regional Choir. His accomplishment reflects the school's commitment to nurturing young talents and providing them with opportunities to excel in their chosen fields.”
Van Leer will be part of a choir comprising talented voices from across the region, coming together to create a harmonious and unforgettable musical experience. The SWACDA Regional Choir event is scheduled to take place this February in Denver, Colorado.
In addition to Aidan, three elementary Regional Choir members from Marthasville and Augusta will also represent the School District of Washington in the 4-6 Choir. Their participation adds to the pride and excitement surrounding SDOW's musical education programs. Congratulations to their director, Jon Logan on this accomplishment!
