Washington High School sent three teams to compete at the 2020 Missouri Academic Coaches Association JV State Championship.
WHS A defeated CIS A in round 9, and then won the first game of the final to go undefeated and claim the 2020 MACA JV State Championship. This was Washington's third win in a row, and five of the past six years.
Since Washington started attending this event, they have never finished outside of the title game. Nother school has won this event more than three times.
Washington A team members were Silas Clements, Samantha Doepker, Kyle Meyer, and Elijah Uffman.
The 16 total teams were divided into two groups of eight and played a round robin schedule. The top two teams advanced to the playoffs.
Washington A went 7-0 with wins over Helias A, Hallsville B, Columbia Independent B, Washington C, Westran, Smith Cotton and Rock Bridge. They won the bracket and made the playoffs.
In playoffs, Washington A defeated Hallsville A in round 8 while Columbia Independent A beat Rock Bridge. That set up round 9 as a meeting of the two undefeated teams. After round 9, there would be an advantaged final, meaning it was really a best-of-three.
Washington B went 5-2 with wins over Calvary Lutheran, Helias B, Owensville, Nixa, and Helias C. Their only two losses came to eventual playoff teams Hallsville A and bracket winner Columbia Independent A. They finished third in their bracket, just outside playoffs.
Washington C went 5-2 with wins over Hallsville B, Columbia Independent B, Westran, Smith-Cotton, and Helias A. After losses to Washington A and Rock Bridge, they finished third in their bracket, just outside playoffs.
After the prelims, the top scoring individuals were honored with medals, including four players from Washington: Austin Gober, Grady Nuckolls, Cameron Schenkel and Samantha Doepker, who took top scorer overall, averaging 125 points per game.
During the afternoon, Washington B and C were in the same bracket, playing for fifth place overall.
Washington C beat Nixa in round 8, while Washington B beat Hallsville B, setting up round 9 as Washington B vs. C for 5th-6th place. Washington B won the match. Three teams from Washington made up half of the top six teams.
Washington C members were Austin Gober, Grady Nukolls and Owen Straatmann.
Washington B members were Rachel Derner, Adric Montgomery, Cameron Schenkel and Owen Spreckelmeyer.
