WHS Juniors Mia Mahon, Jillian Huellinghoff Accepted Into University of Chicago Emerging Rural Leaders Summer Program
Washington High School juniors Mia Mahon and Jillian Huellinghoff both have been accepted into the University of Chicago Emerging Rural Leaders Summer Program.
The Emerging Rural Leaders Program, which takes place July 9-14, is designed for high achieving students who attend rural and small-town high schools across the United States.
Top juniors from rural and small-town high schools are invited to apply for an opportunity to participate on a week-long enrichment program featuring interdisciplinary classes with leading faculty, tours of UChicago’s cutting-edge research facilities, and college application workshops.
Students also will be exposed to the kinds of opportunities available in a large urban center for academic work and professional development through activities that showcase the city of Chicago.
In the past, students have been able to attend improv shows, baseball games, architecture boat tours, and eat at some of Chicago’s most notable restaurants.
“I am incredibly proud of Jillian and Mia for having the ambition to apply for the University of Chicago Rural Leaders Program. As a result, they will have the opportunity to learn and grow as leaders alongside rising seniors from all over the United States,” said Theresa McGowan, WHS Senior College and Career Counselor. “Both Jillian and Mia are amazing young women who will represent Washington High School well."
Current high school juniors who are at least 15 years old are eligible to apply for the Emerging Rural Leaders Summer Program.
Applicants are required to fill out a detailed application, provide at least one letter of recommendation, and answer two essay questions. They essay questions are:
“Why did you choose the particular program/courses for which you have applied? How are they related to your current interests and future plans? Please be as specific as possible, and make sure your response covers each of the courses you elected.”
“How does your perspective, experience or background contribute to this culture of inquiry in this program? What do you hope to gain or learn by engaging with peers from all over the U.S. or from different parts of the world?”
