Members of the 2018-19 Blue Jay Journal Television Staff at Washington High School participated in the "It Only Takes One" program via the Missouri Department of Transportation's Division of Highway Safety to promote safe driving.
Through the program, the staff created PSAs, feature stories, graphics, posters, blog posts, and conducted seatbelt safety checks to address issues such as drowsy driving, the importance of wearing a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
Through various grants, the staff also brought in speakers from Think First Missouri for an all-freshmen assembly and distributed fact sheets from MoDOT about the Graduated License Law to all sophomores.
Thanks to additional grant funds, BJJTV purchased updated metal signs to post on campus encouraging all drivers to buckle up and put their phones down. They were able to distribute nearly 1,000 bookmarks promoting safe driving.
Several staff members also attended MoTRACTION, which is a leadership training camp that empowers youth to take an active role in promoting safe driving habits and making positive changes in their community.
For their efforts this school year, the staff earned a $500 grant for their First Place PSA and another $500 for their educational program.
