Inductees Announced for Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame Inaugural Class
The Washington High School Athletic Department and the Washington High School Athletic Association are proud to announce the selections for the inaugural class of the Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of Washington’s season opening varsity football game against Union on Friday, August 27.
Along with the halftime induction ceremony, there will be a postgame reception for all the Hall of Fame inductees along with their families at the Hummingbird Club in Washington.
The Hall of Fame process consisted of roughly 50 nominations over the categories of Coaches, Contributors, Players and Teams. From the list of nominations, the Hall of Fame Committee initially voted for 20 semi-finalists and then from the semi-finalists, a second vote was taken to select the Finalists.
The 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees:
Coaches: Jim Scanlan (Football), Doris Jones (Volleyball) and Alex Graham (Track and Field).
Contributors: Jack Hagedorn.
Players: Lorene Ramsey (Softball and Volleyball), Tom Officer (Basketball), Jim Gephardt (Football), Tim Hayes (Football), Jill Kingsbury (Cross Country and Track and Field), Mike Sandbothe (Basketball) and Lisa Sandbothe (Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field).
Teams: 1973 state champion football team.
The Washington High School Athletic Association has been constructing an interactive Hall of Fame display, which will be located in the high school gymnasium.
The Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame is being created to recognize and honor Washington High School student athletes, coaches, teams and sports contributors for their achievements and/or contributions to the Washington High School Athletic Department.
The number of inductees each year are as follows:
*Initial Class (2021): 8-12 inductees.
*Next four years (2022-2025): 5-9 inductees.
*2026 and onward will be 3-6 inductees every two to three years.
Once nominated, nominees will be active for five years. After five years, those not selected will be placed on an inactive list and be eligible for re-nomination.
