WHS Girls District GolfFor the first time in the history of the program, the Washington High School girls golf team has qualified for state competition.

Washington High School hosted the Class 3 District 1 Girls Golf Tournament on Monday, October 10, at Wolf Hollow Golf Club.

The district champion and runner-up teams both advanced their top four player scores from the district tournament to the state tournament. Also advancing were the top 12 individual player scores not among the top four from the qualifying teams.

Visitation claimed the district championship with a team score of 328. Washington finished in second place with a team score of 369, which was nine strokes better than third-place Rockwood Summit.

The MSHSAA Class 3 Championships are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 17-18, at Columbia Country Club.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls for the way they have handled themselves all year. At times this year they have known they could play slightly better, but they kept working and improving as the season progressed,” said Washington Golf Coach Adam Fischer. “Advancing as a team takes all 10 players we have in the program throughout the year, and all 10 players should be proud of themselves for the way they attacked the season and had great success from it.”

Advancing to the state championships for the second place Lady Jays as the team’s top four scorers were Abby Blackwell, Ella Martin, Molly Buschmann and Isabella Fitzgerald.

Blackwell, a freshman, led the way for Washington with a 12-over par round of 83, good for an eighth-place finish.

Martin, a sophomore, tied for 14th place with a 20-over par round of 91.

Buschmann, a junior, tied for 18th place with a 22-over par score of 93.

Fitzgerald, a senior, placed 28th with a 31-over par round of 102.

Also playing for Washington was sophomore Lilly Nieder, who placed 34th with a 38-over par score of 109.

A total of 68 players competed in the district tournament.

The top individual score was turned in by Mehlville’s Evangelina Brown, who carded an even-par round of 71.

“Our job for the rest of the week will be to improve as much as we can and attack the state tournament with as much competitive drive as we can,” Fischer said. “These girls have earned the chance to play on the biggest stage of the year next week.”
