Family Reading Night, a free community event, was held on Friday, March 1, at Washington Middle School.
The Community Literacy Foundation, in partnership with the School District of Washington, Washington Public Library and Friends of the Library, Neighborhood Reads Bookstore and the Washington Optimist Club, hosted the event.
The event featured Marc Colagiovanni, author of “The Reflection in Me,” along with the book’s illustrator, Peter H. Reynolds.
Colagiovanni is a children's book author who is currently a practicing attorney in the state of Rhode Island. While he is honored to be a part of the legal profession and enjoys the practice of law, his true passion is writing. He is the author of “When Things Aren't Going Right, Go Left” and “The Reflection in Me,” both illustrated by Reynolds.
Children who attended Family Reading Night listened to stories read by community and school leaders, along with local high school students, participated in crafts based on books, and won books.
Washington Parents as Teachers held a toddler activity room throughout the event.
The Washington Police Department held its annual skit in the gymnasium.
Readers representing the School District of Washington were: WHS Theatre Guild, WHS Choir, WHS football team, WHS Environmental Club, WHS FFA, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Kephart, South Point Elementary Assistant Principal Stefanie Virgen, Campbellton Elementary third-grade teacher Candace Kluba, and Communications Director Craig Vonder Haar.
Casey Fisher, SDOW Director of Technology, was the DJ for the dance party that took place in the gymnasium.
Additional support for the event was provided by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of New Haven, Ziglin Signs, the Washington High School football team, and Washington NEA, along with several volunteers.
