Washington High School’s 19th Annual Jordan Scheer Memorial Children’s Relay for Life took place on Friday, April 26.
Due to rain, the event took was moved indoors at Washington High School.
The event was put together by the WHS Student Council and Leadership class. Advisors are Allison Chaney and Rachel Wehmeyer.
The theme this year was, “Finding a Cure Would Be Sweet!”
There were approximately 250 elementary students in attendance and over 75 volunteers from Student Council, National Honor Society, NJHS, and school staff members.
As of the day of the event, a total of $17,221 was raised from this year’s event. With more donations expected to come in over the next few weeks, the final amount for this year will be close to $20,000. Approximately $410,000 has now been raised in the 19 years of the event.
Proceeds from the event are donated to the Franklin County Relay for Life and benefit the American Cancer Society and cancer awareness.
Students in grades three through six from the School District of Washington and area parochial schools participated in the event.
This year’s event chairs were seniors Brynne Pearcy, Ava Kauffeld and Madison Moore, and juniors Josie Kluesner, Cooper Guss and Luke Mauchenheimer.
The relay is named in honor of Jordan Scheer, a WHS graduate who lost his battle to cancer shortly after his graduation in 2005.
The top fundraising schools were Labadie Elementary (first place), Marthasville Elementary (second place) and Immanuel Lutheran (third place).
