Washington High School boys and girls wrestling teams, along with the girls swimming team, competed in the MSHSAA Championships February 17-19.
State Wrestling
Two Washington wrestlers earned all-state honors by placing in the top six of their respective weight classes during the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday-Saturday, February 17-19, at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Gavin Holtmeyer (38-3) picked up his third career state medal by placing third at 285 pounds in the Class 3 boys ranks.
Julia Donnelly (38-8) picked up her second career state medal by placing fourth at 110 pounds in the Class 1 girls ranks.
Five Lady Jays competed at the MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Wrestling Championships.
Representing Washington at the girls state wrestling meet were Annelise Obermark, Julia Donnelly, Shelby Whitacre, Kendra Bliss and Paytin Welsh.
Six Blue Jays competed at the MSHSAA Class 3 Boys Wrestling Championships.
Representing Washington at the boys state wrestling meet were Gavin Holtmeyer, Casey Olszowka, Couper Deckard, Parker Kelpe, Devon Deckelman and Joey Avitia.
State Swimming
Washington competed in five events at the Class 1 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday-Saturday, February 17-19, at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters.
Representing The Lady Jays were sophomores Ava Kauffeld in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and Zoey Ziegler in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and the 200 Medley Relay team of junior Ellie Williams, sophomore Maddy Henderson, Kauffeld and Ziegler.
In the 100 breaststroke preliminaries, Kauffeld set a new school record with a time of 1:09.46, moving up one placement from her seed to finish 10th in the prelims and qualify for the consolation race.
In the consolation race of the 100 breastroke, Kauffeld finished second in 1:09.68, good for a 10th place overall finish.
In the 200 IM preliminaries, Kauffeld set a new school record with a time of 2:18.39, besting her previous time by .49 seconds to finish 15th overall in prelims and qualify for the consolation race.
In the consolation race of the 200 IM, Kauffeld finished seventh in a time of 2:18.45 to place 15th overall.
Ziegler, seeded 26th in the 100 backstroke, finished 25th overall in a time of 106.26. She also placed 29th in the 100 freestyle in 59.09.
Washington’s 200 medley relay team of Williams, Henderson, Kauffeld and Ziegler set a new school record with a time of 2:00.27, besting their previous time by 1.88 seconds, won their heat and moved up in placement by nine spots, seeded in 27th and finishing 18th.
